REVIEW: SALT

07/22/10

SYNOPSIS:
As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt (Jolie) swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?"
REVIEW: Who is Salt? It is the most appropriate question and if you’re like me, you’ll be asking that question well into the film. There is intrigue, mystery, motivation, and purpose, but what is her purpose and what exactly is her goal? This action thriller is well done and intense. It can be compared to many others including the Bourne series, Wanted, and kind of like Mrs. Smith gone solo. Angie is far from losing her touch or her ability to give us a worthy female action character. Heck, when it comes to that I would be so bold as to say that she is in a league of her own. Salt is crafty, skillful, well trained, and talented at hiding her true intentions. Pretty much everything a top notch super spy needs to be. Believe it or not, considering that its Angelina Jolie we’re talking about here, sex appeal does not play a big part in this picture; surprising to say the least. But then again just her presence is enough. So there were other people in the cast too, dontcha know, and what excellent complements to Angelina. I don’t think Liev Schreiber can ever fall short on a character he plays. He never disappoints no matter what the role. The more I see Chiwetel Ejiofor work the more I like him. He is another one of those actors that don’t disappoint.
Along with the quality cast, the story and the action sequences contribute the most to this production. The action is eye-popping, high caliber stuff with some “she just did what!?” moments. The various mini-missions she undertakes are quite elaborate and masterfully executed. The storyline is more specific than the Bourne series for example, but it does have very good twists and turns and will keep your interest meter high. Unlike Wanted or Mr. and Mrs. Smith, this movie is more like the Bourne series in that it’s all business, very little room for humor. When making an action movie, the cinematography really needs to keep up with the action in order for the movie to be successful and in this case it does very nicely. In this movie, though, the quality of the cinematography is more in the camera work than in the filming locations. There is little trotting around the globe in this one compared to Bourne or Bond (not necessarily a bad thing). Most of the film takes place in good ol’ New York. The man who directed Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Saint, and The Bone Collector now brings us this gem. You can see a pattern here that Phillip Noyce has followed and you can also see the quality of his work. This one falls somewhere at the top end of his repertoire. This is an easy recommendation especially for action lovers, or even just Angelina
lovers.
