REVIEW: IN OUR NATURE
02/03/2013
When Brooklynite Seth takes his girlfriend Andie to his family’s weekend house in upstate New York for a romantic getaway, they are unexpectedly joined by his estranged father Gil and his much-younger new girlfriend, Vicky. The women carefully negotiate emotional minefields as they persuade father and son to share the house for the first time since the summer vacations of Seth’s childhood. This unexpected family reunion in the great outdoors, fraught with tensions old and new, pushes them all to realize the bonds of family are always stronger – and far stranger – than expected.
John Slattery (Mad Men), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and Gabrielle Union (10 Things I Hate About You) star in Brian Savelson’s candid, delicately observed family portrait of couples at a crossroads. From the producers of Meek’s Cutoff and Wendy and Lucy, IN OUR NATURE premiered in 2012 at the SXSW Film Festival and was an official entry at Woodstock Film Festival. Flatiron Film Company, a label of Cinedigm Entertainment Group, will release IN OUR NATURE on cable VOD, standard digital platforms and DVD on February 5, following its theatrical release in December.
IN OUR NATURE is the feature film debut of Brian Savelson, who began his career in theater as associate producer of the 2004 Tony Award-winning production of A Raisin in the Sun. “The characters are the story in a film like this,” he said. “The goal was to allow each of the actors to play a role they haven’t explored before. We all know at least one of these characters, and a lot of us know all of them. My hope is that by easing into the story and having it flow, just as it would if you were at the cabin for the weekend, the film will inspire the audience to reflect on their own stories.”
