Anywhere But Here

Anywhere But Here: Friday November 12, 1999

It is mid-summer 1995 as a 1978 Mercedes zooms down the highway, heading west. Inside sit 14-year-old Ann August (Natalie Portman) and her mother Adele (Susan Sarandon). Against her will, Ann is being moved to Beverly Hills where Adele, stifled by small-town life in Bay City, Wisconsin, hopes to make her colorful dreams come true. Ann is furious at having to leave the life she loves. Adele is tired of defending herself against her daughter's longings for home and family, and feels that she's taking Ann away from a lifeless future and offering her an exciting new world.
Their first stop in Los Angeles is the Beverly Hills Hotel, the symbol of Adele's quest; they then head off to a Travelodge motel and what will become their real life - meals at diners and a very ordinary one-bedroom apartment in the flats of Beverly Hills.
Over the next two years, Ann and Adele adjust to the reality of life in Los Angeles. Their relationship is close, but always volatile. Adele remains on the outside looking in, always wanting more. Ann is the realist, seeing things for what they are, sometimes more the mother than the daughter.
Together, mother and daughter are on a journey of discovery - of new possibilities, of their respective dreams and of each other. TM & (c) 1999 Fox

It was a good story, but a little to long and slow...you can only go on about a mother-daughter relationship for so long before you loose intrest.

It's just great, you can't describe what you get from this movie. Your happy, sad, touched, it's everything in one movie and it's definitely worth seeing.

It was a good movie on relationships but I couldn't really see a point to the movie.   A lot of topics weren't detailed enough to understand all of what happened.   Overall it was a great acting job on the parts of Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman.

HOPE IS ALL SOME PEOPLE HAVE.... I know it may seem difficult to comprehend (by some)that this kind of life is worth living.  But,there is a 'richness-of-being' that unless you are living it! one may not understand. My 14 yr old daughter made that very trip in the summer of 94' from Wisconsin to Marin. Existence is not enough for everyone......

It was o.k. I thought it would have been an uplifting mother daughter movie opportunity. Its actually a depressing, heavy movie. Better to see with a friend or husband than to take an adolescent daughter to.

I really liked this movie. It's true that Natalie Portman and Susan Sarandon are basically the whole film, and this would have been boring had they had been anyone else. However, Natalie Portman is amazingly beautiful and a joy in most any movie; Susan Sarandon plays her role perfectly. This film makes you cry, laugh, smile, and in general, uplifts you. It is sad though, and it really touches you because it's about the trials of life and the realities of growing up. Anyone female that has ever been annoyed by their mother can relate to this movie. It sends the message that despite all the hatred and irritation that Anne (Natalie Portman) may have felt for her mother, she realizes that her mom loves her and has special qualities. I too have had the 'blame mother' syndrome but I left this movie appreciating my mother more and knowing that who she is has made me into the person I am. Wonderful movie.

I think that this movie could have been a lot better.  i don't think anyone should have been nominated for ANY awards!!!!!!!!!   i think that ann and her mom should not fight so much.  you need to make a movie about happiness and love and joy and the exact opposite of mean mean mean!!!!!!!  i thnk that it should be just like barney's great adventure. it was happy no meanness and defenitly NO adult situations. i think the  movie should have less sexual talk and adel should not be such a bad influence on ann.  i really think the movie stunk!!!!!  P-U YYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKK!!!! DON'T EVER LET THIS MOVIE BE SHOWN IN THEATERS AGAIN!!!!!  I HATED IT!!!!!  PEOPLE SHOULD NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OTHER THAN THAT, ILOVED IT!! The movie was really good even if it's kind'a long and dragging. It clearly visualizes the typical mother-daughter relationship evolving in our modern society. The actors were able to give justice to their roles.Good job!

The idea is simple: a young girl and her mother share a love/hate relationship.  It's not a very original storyline (which is not always a problem--witness the fundamentally flawed, yet razor sharp Meryl Streep film, Postcards From The Edge), but unfortunately, the telling of the tale stays that way, as well--only mediocre.  The main problem (there are several, however) is that the film lacked a sense of character. Bonnie Bedelia had a fraction of a part, Shawn Hatosey was a charicature--an amalgam of Rainman and Sling Blade--and perhaps the most talented actress of the lot (in this film, at least), Thora Birch, hardly registered, at all. The only developed people were Ms. Portman and Ms. Sarandon. And even THEIR relationship felt a little strained. Almost as if the situations laid out for them were placed SPECIFICALLY to be used as obstacles or moments that would REQUIRE a mother/daughter confrontation. I can accept arguing over ice cream. But the lead in to it was listless. Arguing over a party? Please. And of course, the only person for Ms. Portman to portray during her audition was her mother, right? The audition itself was the only fresh idea the movie had going for it. Watching it was forgetting where you were. It was a pearl inside the old, barnacled oyster, and Ms. Portman ran wild with it. I would have given her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for that scene alone. It was the silliest, the corniest, most obvious, and yet the most audacious one, ringing truer than anything else in this disaster of a movie. A lesser actress would have played Anne August with whiny postures: a kid playing a kid, in every sense of the word. A better actress would have chosen a better movie to be in. Or would she? Meryl Streep made She Devil, Glenn Close made 101 Dalmations, and Jodi Foster made Nell. Perhaps it is not how good an actress is, but rather how much of a challenge she wants to attempt. Perhaps Ms. Portman IS a brilliant actress, who, single handedly raised the bar for this sub-standard film. Y! es, I think that may be the case. She may very well BE an acting genius, who figured out the nuances and rhythms of a virtually pulse-less movie. In a way, she is a miracle worker, giving life to something that was dead on arrival. Heck, doesn't she deserve an award for that alone? I'd give her the Pulitzer for showing up for work at all, and not straying Anywhere But Here.
