Miami Film Festival GEMS “CAPERNAUM” Wins Audience Award

After four days of amazing films, Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival audiences have voted CAPERNAUM as the winner of the GEMS 2018 Gigi Guermont Audience Award.

Directed by Nadine Labaki, the film’s politically-fueled drama has a unique storyline that brings attention to the issues of children in Beirut’s slums.

The film was also winner of the Jury Prize at 2018 Cannes Film Festival and is Lebanon’s official entry for the 2019 Academy Awards.

The Miami Film Festival GEMS Audience Award is dedicated to the loving memory of Genevieve “Gigi” Guermont, who battled Cystic Fibrosis throughout her young life. Cherished by all who knew her, Gigi’s indomitable spirit was matched only by her deep love for the arts. Gigi was a passionate supporter of Miami’s cultural institutions, and was an especially dedicated friend to the Festival, serving actively on our Host Committee. No matter where she was in her journey battling Cystic Fibrosis, we could always count on Gigi’s support. We are grateful for each moment we were able to share with Gigi, and will continue to remember her fondly and frequently.
