BRIDGET JONES'S BABY

09/16/2016

SYNOPSIS:
After breaking up with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget Jones’s (Zellweger) “happily ever after” hasn’t quite gone according to plan. Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job as top news producer and surround herself with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. What could possibly go wrong?
Then her love life takes a turn and Bridget meets a dashing American named Jack (Dempsey), the suitor who is everything Mr. Darcy is not. In an unlikely twist she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch…she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby’s father.
REVIEW: The first time I saw Bridget Jones, the quote that made me totally love her was the following:
Bridget Jones Diary 2001 ”Bridget Jones, wanton sex goddess, with a very bad man between her thighs... Mum... Hi.”
I was so happy to see my friend Bridget back at it just a few years later and in that film this was my favorite quote:
Bridget Jones Edge of Reason 2004
“I truly believe that happiness is possible... even when you're thirty-three and have a bottom the size of two bowling balls.”
So when I heard that Bridget (Renee Zellweger) was back 12 years later, I couldn’t wait! I called up my best friend Marilyn and asked “Did you see the Bridget Jones movies?” to which she replied, “Are you kidding?” and off we went to see
Bridget Jones Baby.
We find Bridget in her flat, alone celebrating her 43 birthday, this time with just the perfect tune playing in the background. She is as the song says “All by myself”. Ten years have passed, and her relationship with Darcy has been over for a bit. But not all is sad in our girl’s life. She is successful, working as the producer of a news show, and has a lovely flat, as her mother reminds her when asking if she has considered artificial insemination.
Slight flashback and as her 43rd birthday approaches, it’s all the more evident that her friends have matured into marriage and parenthood and left her behind. In comes her co-worker and friend Miranda (Sara Solemani), a free spirited 30 something who basically hijacks Bridget off to a music festival where a whole lot of dirking goes ensues. I must mention it was really fun to see Ed Sheeran in a cameo as himself! Bridget meets Jack (Patrick Dempsey) in true Bridget fashion, whilst falling face first into the muddy ground of said music festival. Did I mention there was a lot of drinking? At the end of the first day and lots of the drinking I mentioned earlier, Bridget literally finds herself falling into bed with Jack and uncomfortably stumbling off the next morning sure that she will never bump into the handsome stranger she just wantonly shagged.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and a couple of chance meetings with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), her old flame, a few more drinks and Bridget falls in to bed with the soon to be divorced Mr. Darcy. And thus Bridget Jones Baby. But who’s the dad? Well, much to the amusement of Bridget’s Gynecologist, played hilariously by Emma Thompson, who I might add was one of the writers of this screenplay, no one is sure. Bridget has a lot of thinking and explaining to do, both to these men and to her parents.
This brings me to the scenery which is beautiful, especially when Bridget goes to visit her parents in the country. The old churches, church graveyards and green country side just make me want to head for England right away.
Marilyn was rooting for Darcy, in her words “every woman wishes to have someone look at them the way that Mark looks at Bridget”. I was rooting for Jack, the billionaire inventor of a dating site based on algorithms. He’s been a very happy bachelor until Bridget advises that he may soon be a daddy and all of a sudden he wants a life with a wife and child. He didn’t have to be but he is all in and ready for this daddy business. See, Mark is Mark. He doesn’t show much emotion and isn’t going to easily give up the round the clock work ethic that broke up his relationship with Bridget in the first place.
Mark is stodgy and slightly aspergers, where in Jack is fun and happy go lucky. Figuring out how they will handle this until the baby is born and a DNA test can be performed, is what makes this film entertaining.
So who is the father you ask? Well, you’ll just have to go see the movie to find out.
