10 Items or Less Movie Review

Morgan Freeman plays a renowned (but unnamed) actor who is best known for his resonant voice and his penchant for starring in blockbuster suspense thrillers. But success has its price. The process of committing to a film has gotten so big, with agents, managers, and lawyers in tow, that he has not made a film for four years. Hoping to get back in the game, he has agreed to consider doing an “indie” film about a night manager in a low-rent supermarket. He asks to be dropped off at the market in Carson, a working class suburb of Los Angeles, so he can research his character.

The actor’s mission goes awry as he discovers that there’s no store manager present and nobody speaks English, with the exception of Scarlet (Paz Vega), the cashier in charge of the ‘10 items or less’ checkout lane. Scarlet seems to be the only person actually at work at the store, and she guards the integrity of the ‘10 items’ rule zealously, even as she knows she is overworked and under-appreciated.

When the actor’s driver fails to pick him up at the appointed time, he finds himself stranded in a location – and a world – that is completely unfamiliar. Incapable of doing anything for himself, the pampered star appeals to Scarlet for help. She agrees to take him back to Brentwood, but only after an important appointment she has later in the day. Scarlet is going on a job interview at a construction company and holds the fragile hope of leaving the market behind her. The actor decides her interview is an “audition” and eagerly helps her to prepare. A most unexpected relationship blooms between these two kindred spirits, colliding under the most unlikely of circumstances, and each of them will discover that life still has the capacity to surprise and to satisfy.
