REVIEW: CLASH OF THE TITANS

07/25/10

SYNOPSIS: In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, Perseus and his warriors will only survive if Perseus accepts his power as a god, defies fate and creates his own destiny.
REVIEW: Having watched and enjoyed the original movie when I was a kid, I could not be happier when I knew there were going to remake this epic classic, in my mind, the possibilities were endless, I could not imagine how the movie would look with today’s technology, then I found out that an actor such as Liam
Neeson, which is one of my favorite actors, was going to be in it as Zeus I began to think the movie was up to something, then I heard it was going to be in 3 D, after that I saw the previews, and all I could repeat to myself is “I can not wait to see this movie,” then I saw the movie and found myself speechless, unfortunately it was not the “Oh My God this movie is awesome!” kind of speechless.
For starters, let me tell you that the movie visually is perfect
in high defintion. All the Mythological characters and settings are absolutely marvelous; from the lovely Pegasus, the menacing medusa, and terrifying kraken, along with some magnificent digitally design cities, environments, and statues would keep your eyes in
awe. Story wise the movie is entertaining, and I think is somewhat better than the first one, and although it is also
inaccurate with Perseus’ story, I like this version way better.
I also like how they play tribute to the first movie in a scene when an
old character is shown. The problem I found with the story is that there was such a waste of talent and
opportunity. With so much background on the Olympian gods, I think some of them should have played a more important role than the one they just did and they should have looked also more impressive as they did, as matter of fact is a shame that the movie waste Liam’s talent in such a flat character, also I hate that Hollywood keeps making Hades the bad guy, when in reality he was one of the most neutral gods, who even help heroes in some stories.
I do not want to mention the acting, just by the fact that
this was an April movie
said it all, however overall I think the whole cast did a good job for what they have, Liam Neeson could have been better; he seemed that he was forcing his character a little to much, Sam Worthington did Avatar all over again, it was just the same character and
expressions, Gemma Artenton was one of my favorites performance, she really understood her character, but the best was without a doubt Mad Milkelsen as he
personified Draco, he became the most sympathetic character
of them all.
Being a big fan of Greek mythology, I felt cheated, the story is just not as good as I was expecting, there is not enough background, it did not feel titanic enough to me, Perseus and his crew kept fighting and fighting without any real development taking place. It was just like they took pieces of each battle and merged them together. However I have a lot of fun seen all those creatures come to live, and some how enjoy the ending.
Summing up we got great visuals, worse real 3D movie, a decent story and performances making Clash of the Titans a movie to go see
to
appreciate how much we have improved in special effects and action sequences, and how low Hollywood had fallen in story development. It is a shame that not even the mighty Zeus could save this movie to be the first big
disappointment of the year.

BLU-RAY: The
film is presented in 1080P widescreen in a 2.40:1 aspect ration
preserving its theatrical format. The picture is just flawless,
giving the film the clarity that only high
definition can provide. Not only the picture looks excellent in
this release, also the sound it is good, a 5.1 English DTS-HD Master
Audio (48kHz/24bit). It also includes 5.1 Digital Sounds in
Francais and Spanish that provides a good complement to the
picture.
In terms of Special Features,
the Blu-ray has a little over 80 minutes of bonus material. It
includes 18 minutes of deleted scenes and a 5 minutes alternate
ending which don't add any new to the film. I found the
theatrical ending to be more appropriate. Another featurette is
the Maximum Movie Mode. This featurette enables a picture in
pictures mode which allows the filmmakers to take the viewers
behind-the-scenes of the making of the film. It also includes Maximum
11 focus points, detailing how the movie was made. Finally the
blu-ray includes the featurette "Sam Worthington: An Action Hero for the Ages",
a 7 minute documentary showing how Sam Worthington prepared for
the film. As part of the combo pack this release also
includes DVD and digital copies of the film.
On July 27th, Clash of The Titans will also be available ON DEMAND through Digital Cable, Satellite TV, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles and it can be downloaded for rental or purchase on iTunes and Amazon Video On Demand.
