REVIEW: MOON
1/10/10
OVERVIEW: Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon, upcoming Iron Man 2) must confront himself in the psychological sci-fi thriller MOON, debuting on Blu-rayTM and DVD January 12 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. In the near future, astronaut Sam Bell (Rockwell) is getting ready to return home to Earth from his station on the Moon when things take an eerie turn. Featuring the voice of two-time Academy Award® winner Kevin Spacey (Best Supporting Actor, The Usual Suspects, 1995; Best Actor, American Beauty, 1999) as Sam’s only companion, the on-base computer “Gerty,” MOON is an updated classic sci-fi film about a lonely astronaut stationed on the far side of the Moon struggling to find his purpose in life.
Nominated for four Spike TV Scream Awards, winner of the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and an official selection at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival,
SYNOPSIS: Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the completion of his 3-year-long contract with Lunar Industries, mining Earth’s primary source of energy on the dark side of the Moon. Alone with only the base’s vigilant computer, Gerty (voiced by Oscar® winner Kevin Spacey, 1999 Best Actor, American Beauty), as his sole companion, Bell’s extended isolation has taken its toll. The only link to the outside world comes from satellite messages from his wife and young daughter. He longs to return home but a terrible accident on the lunar surface leads to a disturbing discovery that contributes to his growing sense of paranoia and dislocation so many miles away from home. MOON is an engrossing, intelligent sci-fi thriller that ranks with genre classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
