REVIEW: NEW MOON
2 Disc Special Edition

03/18/10

SYNOPSIS:
In the second chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling Twilight series, the romance between mortal Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) grows more intense as ancient secrets threaten to destroy them. When Edward leaves in order to keep Bella safe, she tests fate in increasingly reckless ways in order to glimpse her love once more. But when she’s saved from the brink by her friend, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), Bella will uncover mysteries of the supernatural world that will put her in more peril than ever before.
REVIEW: Yes
it’s here, finally the moment has come. This is one of the
most anticipated movies of the year. What hype, what
excitement, what a following, what a fan base, what a bunch
of Robert Pattinson freaks! But wait, there is a new
development . . . Taylor Lautner is grabbing a whole lot of
attention and now the question of the day is are you Team
Edward or Team Jacob? Bella (Kristen Stewart) is now caught
in the middle of these two very important guys in her life
and she is torn. She has both of them eating out of her
hands; quite powerful for an ordinary human girl. But she
does go through her share of pain and bad heartbreak. It is
tragic as she tries to fit in a world where she really
doesn’t belong.
This movie is going to be big at the box office. I believe
it will top the first one because it is better than the
first one. Even though some parts are cheesy/corny, the
overall production is great, the love triangle scenario is
intriguing, and the story has a lot more substance as it
unfolds to show a bigger picture of this saga. Some people
say that they don’t want to see a movie about vampires and
werewolves and stuff like that but this movie is so much
more. The first one laid out the groundwork and now this one
is so much easier to get wrapped up in. It is more like a
bizarre love story than a sci-fi thriller, yet it has
elements of both. I’ve got to admit, it is an entertaining
and interesting movie. The special effects were also better
this time around. Now we’re dealing with werewolves as
well as vampires and it’s really cool. Of course, Bella is
in the thick of it all. As you would imagine, the action
sequences are pretty good too.
When you ask people what they didn’t like about New Moon,
many might say Kristen Stewart’s performance. Well, guess
what, she is just that way and you get more of the same in
this film . . . well okay, maybe she was a little better.
Her performance didn’t bother me too much because I
already realized that she is just that way, somewhat shy and
lightly expressive. You can never accuse her of over acting,
that’s for sure. The two other major players, Robert and
Taylor, were good with solid performances. Then again, when
it comes to these guys and the ladies in the viewing
audience, it’s more about the eye candy than their
performances (lots of shirtlessness for example). I really
enjoyed Dakota Fanning’s cameo . . . sharp. Another
enjoyable aspect of the film is the breathtaking locations
and overall cinematography. It is an appropriate backdrop
for this story, mostly rainy, overcast weather with lush
woods, steep cliffs, and vast fields. It really adds to the
mood and effect of the storytelling. Director Chris Weitz
(Down to Earth, About a Boy, The Golden Compass) did a good
job of following Catherine Hardwicke’s directorial
performance in New Moon by maintaining the essence of the
story while adding a little more intensity. Even if you are
not a New Moon fan, this is still a decent movie to see.
