REVIEW: PLANET 51
3/07/10
OVERVIEW: An all-star cast gives voice to the galactic-sized animated sci-fi adventure comedy Planet 51, blasting off on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack on March 9, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. An out-of-this-world adventure for both children and adults, the CG animated film features the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson (Race to Witch Mountain), Jessica Biel (TV’s “Seventh Heaven”), Justin Long (Alvin & the Chipmunks 2), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), Seann William Scott (American Pie franchise) and John Cleese (Monty Python). The tables are turned when an astronaut arrives on a distant planet, but he's not alone; he's surrounded by aliens who desperately fear invasion by...aliens. Planet 51 transports the entire family into a whole new world where green aliens are at home and humans are on the run.
SYNOPSIS: When Chuck the astronaut (Dwayne Johnson) lands on a distant planet filled with little green people, he is surprised to discover that we are not alone in the galaxy. But he gets the shock of his life when the residents of Planet 51 mistakenly believe that his presence is the start of an alien invasion of the human kind! Luckily, an alien teenager named Lem (Justin Long) quickly realizes that Chuck is friendly and the two blast off on an adventure to try and return Chuck safely to his space ship!
DVD: The film is
presented in widescreen with a 2.35:1 aspect ration preserving its theatrical
format. Sony
Pictures Home
Entertainment has done it again with this transfer. Not only the picture looks
excellent in this release, also the sound it is good. A
Dolby Digital English 5.1 providing a nice complement to the
picture it also includes English, and Spanish
subtitles.
In terms of Special Features the DVD includes
the widescreen presentations of the feature, extended scenes, a Planet 51 music video
montage. In addition, there is the short film “The World of Planet 51,” a clip reel showing the various environments found in the film; as well as two behind-the-scenes featurettes: “Life on Planet 51,” a making-of documentary incorporating interviews with the voice cast, animators, and filmmakers; and “Planetarium - The Voice Stars of Planet 51,” which includes interviews with Justin Long, Jessica Biel and Dwayne Johnson.
Overall Planet 51 has enough
material to keep entertain the little one as well as grown ups.
Little by little Sony Pictures is getting close to the perfect
animated film. This is one of those DVDs worth having in your
collection. Kids for sure will want to watch the film over and
over again.
