REVIEW: PLEASE GIVE

10/17/10

OVERVIEW: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment places human nature under a microscope when Nicole Holofcener’s (Friends with Money, Lovely & Amazing) Please Give debuts on high-definition Blu-ray Disc on October 19, 2010.
SYNOPSIS:
Married antique dealers Kate and Alex (Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt) plan on gutting the apartment they own next door to remodel and expand their home once Andra, the cranky, elderly widow (Ann Guilbert) who lives there finally dies. When Kate, conflicted with her own guilt, befriends Andra’s granddaughters (Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet), the results are anything but predictable in this devastatingly-candid dramedy that examines life and death…and everything in between.
DVD: The film is presented in widescreen with a
2.35:1 aspect ration preserving it theatrical released
ratio. The film looks clean, images without any types of color
saturation. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has done pretty
good job with this transfer. Not only the picture looks
good in this version of the film, also the sound it is
good. A 5.1 Dolby Digital English, French and Thai 5.1, providing a nice complement to the picture. It also includes
Chinese (Mandarin Traditional), English (US), French (Parisian), Korean,
Spanish (Latin Am), Thai.
In terms of special features
the DVD includes outtakes, Question & Answers with Director
Nicole Holofcenter. It also includes a nice behind-the-scenes
featurette, in which the filmmakers and the cast give their perspective
of the film as well as deatils on how the film was made.
Overall, with dramatic and funny situations that is not that far from reality Director Nicole Holofcener managed to deliver a extraordinary film that will leave you with a new perspective about the art of helping people. The well the developed script and the outstanding performance by its cast, make Please Give one of the best independent films of 2010.
