FILM REVIEW: Lord
Voldemort: I
must be the one to kill Harry Potter!
It’s as simple and straightforward as that. The end is near
and it’s hard to believe after all these years of Harry
Potter. It’s amazing how we’ve watched these kids grow, and
it will be sad to let them go, or at least in this context. What
can you say about one of the most successful franchises in
cinematic history? Some of the releases have been better than
others, but they have all kept you glued to the Harry Potter
saga. And now that we are at the second to last movie, you
can’t help but to want to soak it all in. I’ve heard a lot
of mixed reactions regarding the last episode, The Half Blood
Prince, such as it was too weak or lacked action. If you agree
with that, you will be pleased with this latest chapter because
it is better. It is dramatic and touching, it has more action
and conflict, and it is more serious and somber. It seems that
there is a direct correlation between the kids’ maturity and
the seriousness of each movie. Everything is leading to a final
battle between good and evil, Luke and Vader, Frodo and Sauron,
Neo and Smith, Potter and Voldemort. Yeah, strangely enough,
this film reminded me a lot of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and
even Matrix. When you watch it, you’ll probably see what I
mean. I’m sure J.K. Rowling had no idea of how much this whole
thing was going to blow up. Just ask any of the thousands of
people who stood in line for hours on end just to get a glimpse
of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter section in Universal
Studios Orlando the first few weeks after it opened. I
personally saw the line (saw it, did not get in it) on opening
day in mid June. The line wrapped around the entire park. It was
a total coincidence that Priscilla and I, and the rest of our
crew, happened to be there that day, not knowing of this major
event. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. The Harry Potter
movie series is also unlike anything we have ever seen and this
latest release is the first layer of icing on the cake.
Along with the maturing stars of the show, their maturing
performances, and the maturing subject matter and conflict, the
special effects just keep getting better and better. There is a
good amount of “magic” used in this film which is always a
highlight. Another plus is that the breathtaking scenery and
filming locations are really above and beyond any other Potter
flick so far. I also liked the fact that, even if ever so
briefly, we get to see a vast majority of all the characters we
have encountered throughout this journey. And we get to see
quite a bit of Voldemort too. Speaking of which, the cliffhanger
ending is pretty good. Fittingly, David Yates who directed the
two latest Potters, Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince,
is the man in charge for the two last Potters and he has done a
great job with them. It goes without saying that I recommend
this movie, especially if you are a Potter follower.
