REVIEW: NOWHERE BOY
1/23/11
OVERVIEW: Beatles fans will get a closer look into the early years of music legend John Lennon when Nowhere Boy comes to Blu-ray Disc and DVD on January 25, 2011 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
In 1955, future international rock sensation John Lennon (Aaron Johnson, Kick-Ass) was a mischievous teenage boy living with his Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas, Oscar® Nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role, The English Patient, 1996) in Liverpool, England and trying to reconnect with his free-spirited mother Julia (Anne Marie Duff, Notes on a Scandal). The tensions of his early life would drive young John to escape from the world around him through music, and catapult him to join Paul McCartney (Thomas Brodie Sangster, Love Actually) in the formation of one of the most influential rock 'n' roll bands of all time.
SYNOPSIS: Imagine...John Lennon's childhood. Liverpool 1955: a smart and troubled fifteen-year-old is hungry for experience. In a family full of secrets, two incredible women clash over John (Aaron Johnson): Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas), the buttoned-up aunt who raised him, and Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), the prodigal mother. Yearning for a normal family, John escapes into the new and exciting world of rock 'n' roll where his fledgling genius finds a kindred spirit in the teenage Paul McCartney (Thomas Brodie Sangster, Love Actually). Just as John begins his new life, tragedy strikes. But a resilient young man finds his voice - and an icon explodes into the world.
DVD: The film is
presented in widescreen with a 2.35:1 aspect ration preserving its theatrical
format. Sony
Pictures Home
Entertainment has done it again with this transfer. Not only the picture looks
excellent in this release, also the sound it is good. A
Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround providing a nice complement to the
picture it also includes English subtitles.
Unfortunately the DVD doesn't include French and Spanish
subtitles, which I found to be considering the big Hispanic
population in the USA.
In terms of special features
the DVD includes deleted scenes and the featurette “Nowhere Boy: The Untold Story of John Lennon and the Creation of The Beatles”.
