SYNOPSIS:
A match-up made in tough-guy heaven -- Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro star in Killer Elite. Based on a shocking true story, Killer Elite pits two of the world's most elite operatives – Danny, an ex-special ops agent (Jason Statham) and Hunter, his longtime mentor (Robert De Niro) – against the cunning leader of a secret military society (Clive Owen). Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of cat and mouse — where the predators become the prey.
FILM REVIEW:
A movie starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Robert DeNiro has got to be off the charts, right? Not so fast my cinematic fanatics. Sure, the cast is incredible, the story is decent, especially being based on actual people and events, and the action is pretty good too, but there is something missing. I felt it and you might feel it too. Something is keeping it from being a great movie as opposed to an okay movie. I can’t put my finger on it though. The movie has a good share of intrigue and at times is quite intense. There are some really good fight scenes between Jason’s character and Clive’s character. There is also a really good shock moment that might knock your socks off. I couldn’t help but to briefly look away from the screen. The cinematography throughout is well done as it helps keep you tuned in. But even with all this the movie overall does not impress as much as it could. If I had to guess I would say that either the story itself is a little lackluster or maybe the way it is presented falls just short. The performances were good so it’s not that. We are talking about three action thriller masters and they each live up to the title. The supporting cast was also collectively good including a sharp role turned in by an almost unrecognizable Dominic Purcell. But getting back to the story, it would get confusing at times. You might find yourself asking who really is the good guy in all of this. The movie is chock full of cover ups and top secrecy that will make your head spin. This is a good thing and a bad thing. It is interesting and confusing.
This is the first major motion picture direction for Gary McKendry and he did okay considering. It is a bit rough around the edges, but nothing that some sanding and touch up paint can’t fix. The film does entertain but I find any of Jason’s Transporters or even Clive’s Shoot ‘Em Up to be more entertaining. If you do decide to see it, it’s not a bad movie but it just might not meet your expectations so don’t go into it with high ones.
