In a small French town, Germain, a nearly illiterate man in his 50s and considered to be the village idiot by his friends at the local bistro, takes a walk to the park one day and happens to sit beside Margueritte, a little old lady who is reading excerpts from her novel aloud. She’s articulate, highly intelligent and frail. Between Germain and Margueritte, there are 40 years and 200 pounds difference. Afternoons spent reading aloud on their favorite bench transform their lives and start them both on a new journey – to literacy and respect for Germain, and to the deepest friendship for Margueritte..
French cinema legend Gérard Depardieu (The Last Metro, Cyrano de Bergerac) and 97-year-old actress Gisèle Casadesus (Sarah’s Key) star in MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE, an intimate story of life’s random encounters, directed by Jean Becker (One Deadly Summer). Germain (Depardieu) is lured by Margueritte’s (Casadesus) passion for life and the magic of literature from which he has always felt excluded. Despite both actors’ prolific resumés, this is the first time they have shared the screen. “I loved her femininity,” said Depardieu about working with Casadesus. “I see the result of a good life and a particular kind of love, a hope or belief.” “Everything was very natural between us,” adds Casadesus about her co-star. “He is always pitch-perfect. You feel carried by him.” Becker has directed both actors in previous films: Depardieu in Elisa (1995) and Casadesus in The Children of the Marshland (1998).
