The Look of Silence is Joshua Oppenheimer’s powerful companion piece to the Oscar®-nominated The Act of Killing. Through Oppenheimer’s footage of perpetrators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered, as well as the identities of the killers. The documentary focuses on the youngest son, an optometrist named Adi, who decides to break the suffocating spell of submission and terror by doing something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: he confronts the men who killed his brother and, while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions. MR HOLMES
MR. THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT
It is the summer of 1971. Dr. Philip Zimbardo launches a study on the psychology of imprisonment. Twenty-four male undergraduates are randomly assigned to be either a guard or a prisoner. Set in a simulated jail, the project unfolds. The participants rapidly embody their roles—the guards become power-hungry and sadistic, while the prisoners, subject to degradation, strategize as underdogs. It soon becomes clear that, as Zimbardo and team monitor the escalation of action through surveillance cameras, they are not fully aware of how they, too, have become part of the experiment.

LILA AND EVE

A HARD DAY
Homicide detective Geon-soo Go is having a hard day: in less than 24 hours, he receives a divorce notice from his wife, his mother passes away, and along with his coworkers, he becomes the focus of a police investigation over alleged embezzlement.
Making things worse, on his way to his mother’s funeral, Geon-soo commits a fatal hit and run and then, desperately tries to hide the accident by hiding the man’s corpse in his deceased mother’s coffin. But when Geon-soo gets a mysterious call from a person claiming to be the sole witness of the crime, he realizes that someone has been watching him all along.
ARDOR
When fires sweep through the rainforest near their property along the Parana River, a poor tobacco-farming family goes on high alert. The head of the family, João, (Chico Díaz) correctly suspects the fire is a result of slash-and-burn tactics by ruthless land-grabbers intent on acquiring the farm he shares with his lovely daughter, Vânia (Braga), and her partner, Jara (Lautaro Vilo) Help arrives in the form of Kaí (García Bernal), an enigmatic man, bearing indigenous tattoos who comes out of the jungle with the grace of a jaguar.
But the violence of the land-grabbers’ assault catches Kaí and the farm dwellers off guard. In short order, the men shoot Jara and force João to sign over his land just before killing him and kidnapping Vânia. Undetected by the assailants, Kaí goes on the offensive. Using his animal-like abilities, he rescues Vânia, retrieves the bogus bill of sale and thwarts a counter-attack by the now-reinforced band of mercenaries—all without taking a life. But with the hornet’s nest now stirred, Kaí, Vânia and Jara must decide how far they will go to preserve the farm and their vanishing way of life.
