Mads Mikkelsen plays Jacob who works at an
orphanage in India. He is Danish but hasn’t lived in Denmark
for 20 years. The orphanage lacks funds, as always, and he
is contacted about a large Danish donation. Jørgen, played
by Rolf Lassgård, is the benefactor and he makes it a
condition
that Jacob himself comes to Denmark to sign the papers.
Jørgen’s daughter is marrying Bo, and Jacob is invited to
the wedding.
Upon arrival he discovers that the mother of the bride, who
is also the benefactor’s wife, is the love of his youth,
Helene, played by Sidse Babett Knudsen. The wedding becomes
a landmark meeting between past and future and puts Jacob in
the dilemma of his life. Together with writer/director
Anders Thomas Jensen, Susanne Bier developed the script’s
story as a natural extension of their previous collaboration
on the award winning and critically acclaimed
films “Open Hearts” and “Brothers”.
The film was edited by Pernille Bech Christensen and shot by
Morten Søborg. The film was shot on location in Denmark and
Bombay, India.
