That's why I never listen to the critics, because if I counted on them, I probably wouldn't see half of the movies I have seen.  This movie was GREAT.  I actually took a half a day off work to see the movie and obviously a lot of other people thought the same way because there wasn't an empty seat in the house.

I really enjoyed this movie!  People in the theatre, on the University of Texas at Austin's campus, gave the movie a standing ovation!!!!!!!!!  We absolutely loved it!!!!!!!!!!  Applause could be heard throughout the student center, and over 300 people attended the first showing. People had to be turned away because the theatre was filled to maximum capacity!!!!!!!  It is worth seeing at least twice!!! I have seen it twice!!!!

The Best Man is a well written and produced movie with an all-star cast that deserves high praise. Following in what I hope to continue as lasting tradition of black writers and directors portraying blacks in positive movies roles as opposed to Hollywood reserving these roles for the more "refined black actor". These movies are important in that they break down these stereotypical roles and portray black men and women in their true fashion as opposed to the shoot-em-up hype that sells tickets. Also, ensure that the ticket stub that you are receiving at movie venues match the movie that you are paying to see. Box Offices shave credit off of black movies sales by handing movie patrons ticket stubs that don't match the intended movie thereby creating the appearance of the movie as a "box-office flop" which discourages and discredits black movies and gives this credit to other movies with higher box office expectations.

I loved this movie, the cast was fantastic! Especially Terrence Howard's character(smile). As always Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, and Nia long were at their best! Newcomer Harold Perrineau keep up the good work! This movie really touched both my husband and I. It was a great story about the test of love and friendship. "A MUST SEE MOVIE"!!!!!!!!

This movie was excellent.  A very refreshing look at successful African Americans, and the love they find.  This is definitely one of Spikes better movies.  I don't listen to the critics when they rate certain movies, I go and see for myself.

I think that this definitely was a great movie, and honestly i don't understand why the ratings are so low, i guess people are just jealous when black people come out with good movies. Oh well, i enjoyed it.

This movie was incredible!  I was hoping that sometime in the last half of this decade, would make a great African American movie!  The actors/actresses did such a great job, and the whole movie itself was so well put together!  I rate The Best Man, the best movie of this decade!!!

Excellent movie! I saw it twice over the weekend and I plan on seeing it at least 2 more times! It's wonderful to see a black film that doesn't center around drugs and violence. I realize that these things do exist in our community (as well as others) but we also have educated successful brothers and sisters that are doing positive things.  I'm glad more filmmakers are creating movies about these people as well. Another movie to add to my black film collection!

I loved the movie.  The movie was a roller-coaster ride of emotions for me.  I laughed, cried, was happy and sad.  I felt like I was there and could identify with the characters.  Hats off to an all-star cast that was fantastic and well chosen. They were so convincing and made their characters so believable.   It is a great story about friendship, love, spirituality and the test of each. The audience talked back to the characters and I heard a lot of "got to see it again" comments afterwards.  I can't wait for the video as I want to make it a gift to many. Of course, as always, Nia, Taye, Morris and Terrence was great and newcomer, Harold Perrineau, held his own.  I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of him.  The only negative thing I can say about the movie is that the N-word was used too many times, for me, in the first 30 minutes of the movie.  There are so many other words that could have been used, such as "Man", "Boo", you know the words.   Overall, it is a ! great movie and I will recommend it to be seen by friends.

I am so proud of this movie!  By Saturday evening, I had already seen it three times.   The themes of love, loss, true intimacy, betrayal and forgiveness kept me coming back for more.  It was very versatile and possessed universal appeal.  Kudos to Malcolm and all who worked on the project.  I woke up extra early on Monday morning to see how the movie ranked and the #1 spot was well deserved.  Thanks for your dream Malcolm and sticking with it until the end.  Looking forward to doing this thing again!

I thought, no I know this is the "Best" movie running right now.Although is has an all black cast, the movie crosses all color barriers. I really enjoyed the story line. The actors all fit perfectly to their script. What I liked particularly, is that the writer made me like a character, that in real life upon meeting him, I probably would have hated, and that was Quintin. WOW-his character was so real and so essential to the film-LOVED HIM!! That's all I can say otherwise I could go on all day on how much I loved this film in one word is was "AMAZING"

This movie was definitly worth seeing and paying 7.50 for.  I will most likely see it again and the ticket sales prove it.  USA today, TV Guide and the Herald don't know what they are talking about.

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. The theater was packed. The cast was wonderful.  I think this movie brought out all of my emotions (happy, sad, proud).   My husband and I will definitely add this one to our video collection.  Also, PLEASE make sure your tickets are for the movie you paid to see.  Ticket sales are how ratings are measured and it is not uncommon to receive the wrong (accidentally, of course) tickets for African American films.

This movie was amazing and really touched the heart. I cried and boo-hooed at the wedding as Lance sturuggled to do his vows. He looked sooooooooooooooooooo good. I enjoyed each character's personality, even Shelby. I liked the fact that the movie presented positive aspects. Last but not least I was going crazy over Taye, Morris and Terrence. They are all blessed with good looks!!!

I think it was definitely worth seeing!! It was fun and enjoyable. In the theatre I attend - everyone was clapping at the end of the movie.  Those critics are the ones who are not worth listening to.  Double Jeopardy was a total flop - what a stinky plot!!!!

The Best Man is the Best Film I have seen in years.  It was great to see realistic relationships amongst intelligent, upwardly mobile African-Americans.  I also enjoyed seeing talented actors who are not usually seen in leading roles.  Everyone was absolutely believable in their characters especially Terence Howard!!  What a talent!   The Best Man is a must see!

The Best Man was a good movie.  Not the best of the year, but good. I really liked the positive career minded African American potrayed here, but I didn't really care for the image that we think it is ok to sleep with whom ever we want regardless of a committed relationship we might be in.  That was a bit to much.  I did like the love that was evident between Lance and Mia. The actors really made you believe that they were in love.  However I didn't care for the "Christian" in this movie being a cussing, fornicating, indecisive man.  Could he at least not have called himself that. It gives us Christians the image that it is ok to do all that cussing in the church no less.  There should be a standard somewhere.

This is definitely one of the greatest movies about African Americans.  The actors in this filmed worked very well together.  It was a film that even grasped the attention of the male gender.  I think Morris Chestnut is absolutely gorgeous!  Does he have a fan club???  How can one received an autographed photo of him??

I thought the movie was great.  The movie had me laughing all the way through it. It's one those movies that can make you laugh and make you cry because I did both.  I don't care what no one says the movie was great and I'm definitely going to see it again an for those who haven't see it yet go see it. And another thing it's a movie that almost everyone can relate to because someone or one that you know have been in that same situation before and if there's someone out there getting ready to get married you need to see these.

I can not believe Mike Clark of USA Today thought Hav Plenty was a "good" movie. That was a piece of crap.  The characters and the plot did not flow together.   It was a very pieced-together movie.  Was that the intent?? Needless to say, The Best Man was, by far, an entertaining and refreshing movie. And isn't that what a movie is supposed to be about? Entertainment.  It shouldn't be a dull, boring view.   And this was not.  Some of the people who are reviewing this movie are obviously white because the only problems they can actually find with it is that it is unrealistic to believe that we can be rich. What a crock!! I wish the reviewers had been in the theater with me and my friends to understand what parts of the movie were the most entertaining to us. Let's face it: white people just don't get it.  They don't get what makes us tick, what makes us laugh, cry or empathize. This was a great movie and I plan to see it again and again and I will purchase the video tape when it comes out.   Morris and Taye were absolutely delicious! The entire cast was beautiful!!! I had a great time!  Isn't that what it's all about? Please, please, please give us more movies like this!!!!

This is comedy, romance, and drama all mixed up like a pot of gumbo. It all came together just right! Nia Long is also a key character in this film and I loved her acting! This film really portrays our race in a beautiful and professional way, and I'm loving every bit of it!

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The characters are all GREAT!!! I don't really understand why the critics are hatin' on this wonderfull movie, but I guess they're just jelous because a black film is doing better than all the rest. I mean look at the box office ratings. Monica Calhoun is so awesome here. I was happy to see,for once, a black female who wasn't a bitch or a slut. She was beautiful, thoughtful, forgiving, and innocent(partly). And the beautiful, Nia Long, gives us another great preformance.Along with georgous Taye Diggs. And Morris Chestnut, who I suspect was had madd talent and was just waiting for a chance. And this chalenging role definatly proved it, All together, I give thes movie two thumbs up. And a kiss for good luck.

The movie was WONDERFUL!  I'm an old  sixty year old broad who thoroughly enjoyed seeing beautiful, young intelligent African Americans up on the screen doing an excellent job. I'm telling all my friends to see it.  The only way we'll get more films like this, is if WE support them by buying tickets.  SO GO SEE IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

It was great! If your are not brain washed by America's white-washed TV programs, you will like it.  It is a shift in the black paradigms we, as black people, are forced to watch--blacks in the ghetto, blacks being clowns, blacks being athletes, blacks being crooks.  I think if you took the same movie and replace the actors with popular, young and attractive whites, TV guide and other's would have rated the movie a hit.   However, the movie was the highest box office draw on its opening weekend ($10 million, of which 85% were "black" dollars).  There is really a slump at the box office, I read in U.S.A. Today. I'm sure many critics were upset that it was not of the genre of Boyz in the Hood, He Got Game or Menace II Society. They probably thought the plot was not feasible, like Blacks building pyramids or Timbuktu.  Let me guess...they did not like Love Jones either.

Ariane
This film has been Highly Under-rated. This film will make you laugh, cry, clap, and is definitly an eye pleaser.  It is a beautiful movie as well as down to earth.  I have to add that Morris Chestnut is the SEXIEST!---not to down play any of the other characters b/c they all have significant roles that are portrayed excellently. GO SEE IT!!!!

How can TV Guide and USA Today give this movie a 50 rating.  Racism still stands tall or could it be that the critics that these publishing compaines use are White and really don't understand BLACK life.  It   is ridiculous that all black movies have to come down to a black-white view point instead of a "WORK of ART" viewpoint. But, by design, you critics make it that way.

A story that men and women can relate to. And it was so real. Being from the Washington, DC area and to have someone using the slang we use here really made me feel like I was right in my neighborhood. Also, I enjoyed how assertive Nia Long's role was in the movie. We need more movies in which the women doesn't play the submissive role. I would recommend it to all age ranges.

Fabulous!  It was worth seeing 3 times in two days. I am a happily married 33 year old African American woman with two female children (11 and 4). I am a full-time Housewife and Assistant to my Husbands home based business.  My husband is 40 years old. I'm willing to share this information so that you are informed of who you are actually hearing from. I went to the Matinee on Wednesday with my aunt. I could not get through my day because of my thoughts of this movie.  I couldn't sleep!  On Thursday I went back to the Matinee, except this time I went alone.  This time I cried when I saw the movie.  That evening I took my husband and HE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! Each male character in his own way was very charming and deserving of the feature title, "The Best Man." In my opinion the Best Supporting Actor catagory nomination should go to Quentin.  He was the only male who was so confident, geniune and aware of his actual self.  As Lance said it, "He's honest." Malcolm Lee is to be commended for his dedication to this project! His hard work has paid off. I just might go see it again this weekend to be included in the weekend number ratings.  (SMILE). I hope the best for you and your future. P.S.- This is not a BLACK MOVIE.  Each time I went I noticed blacks, caucasians, asians (all kinds); and young and old people.  Let's just face the facts - - because the Director and cast is black should not classify this as a black movie.  Where did this  stem from?  Racism grows with silence and it is time that the volume is turned up on this separation. Thank you! Tina Williams Sacramento, California GR8FA8H@aol.com

Great movie!  I saw it three times in two days. My husband and I loved it.  I will probably see it again, rent it when available and buy it when released.  It is a MUST SEE!!!!!!! I think Quentin's character should be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. In my opinion all four men were portrayed "The Best Man" in his own individual way.  My original thought was that the author of the book had his life together, but as the story is told he really did not; However, his love for his friend lead him to make it right.  Lance could recognize inconsistancy in his life and he knew that although he wasn't perfect, he knew he needed God as the higher power in his life to keep him on the straight and narrow. Murph (Shelby's man) could not be himself for living through someone else and it was so refreshing to see him recognize him for himself.  Quentin was so tight -- he actually made you love him.  He was the only one confident in being who he was.  No fronts, no aires, I'm just myself - that's why you had to love him.  As Lance said, "He's honest." There was closure at the end of this movie so it felt good to walk away knowing that each one ended up with someone. The rumor that this is a black movie is an insult. This was the most creative movie I've ever seen.   It revealed everyday experiences for blacks in this country.  We are fun, loving people and we enjoy every day of our lives.  We never stop living!

As a white person with little or no contact with Blacks, I was interested in what a movie featuring an all black cast would be like.  Well, it was suprisinly like a movie featuring an all white cast, only better.  Better than most any movie I've seen in my lifetime.  It was creative, clever, intelligent, suspenseful.  And the Character's were all unique and multifacted. The movie wasn't just a movie for woman who like a story about a wedding.  It had some great "GUY" scenes that my husband thought were thoughtful and hilarious.  I think seeing this movie could do more to end RACE relation strains than any conferences on the subject.

I have recently viewed the movie Best Man for the second time.  I was surprise to note that your movie review only scored the movie as 59.8 on your scale. Fortunatley, enough your scale, is not official. Also, I am curious as to how the score is determined.   And if this is based on a poll of your emails.  I'm also curious as to the race, and age of your viewers. I'm sure Blair Witch scored a 100. Just something to think about.

Great Movie!!!...It's definitely a step in the right direction for honest portrayals of African Americans in today's society. It is a full love story with dramatic & comedic inflections that moved seamlessly between the spectrum of emotions. The movie is the best effort that we have seen from the 40 Acres and a Mule Production House. Previous efforts left us unsatisfied in some respect, either overkill (She's Gotta Have It) disjointed story (Crooklyn) preachy (Do the Right Thing, Get on the Bus) or simply a bad  idea (Girl 6). We believe and hope that a sequel should follow. Congrats to the supurb cast and the extremely talented supporting actors who stole the show. Also Congrats to Mr. Stanley Clark for the excellent score and the Music Supervisor(s) for the excellent Soundtrack!!

I thought it was very funny--finally a black movie depicting blacks who've gone to college and are upwardly mobile.  A group of blacks who are still friends from college and moving forward.  But it was still pleasantly to watch and made me laugh--I mean hardy laughs.

I felt that this movie was definitely OFF DA HOOK!  I mean, it was excellent!  I was so excited to see an all African-American cast and there was no gang-banging and killing.  It was so real and I felt so connected to the circle of friends.   Morris Chestnut is TOO SEXY for words.  I mean, he has definitely come a long way since "Boyz N The Hood."  Taye Diggs is ALWAYS SEXY as well.  The movie was great, and I would definitely love to see it again. I will definitely purchase it once it's on videotape.

Finally a film about intelligent, beautiful African Americans. I am a college student that has been starved for a film about me and the people that I associate with. Educated people with real careers and real lives that contain real problems. I love this film and do not mind one bit giving it my money by seeing it over and over again. I have seen it three times and counting. I can hardly wait to buy in on video or DVD. Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut are some fine brothas. I would like to commend Mr.Lee for making such a great film. Because of this film I will be a loyal fan of his. Please continue to make more and more excellent films.

It was alright!  With all the possibilities for interesting character development, it really came down to one character, Harper, and how he got his groove on with his homey's girlfriend.  Here's a hint for next time: Take each character and present their side of the story.  Let them lure you into the real of possibility as the story nears its end.  That way it wouldn't have been so damned predictable.  My girlfriend was telegraphing to me what was going to happen next in this movie.  But hey, that'me, I just wasn't in the mood for goofiness that night.

I loved the movie.  I thought it was so great.  Ive seen the movie twice already, and after seeing the movie this week I couldn't wait to look it up on line to see Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs.  The reason I gave the movie a 90, is because Im under age and my dad was not thrilled about me going to see a R movie, but other than that it was tight.  Tell Morris he is fine and he could be mine!!!!!

This movie was true to life. My boyfriend's life is similar to Harper in the movie. He analyzes everyone elses life but his own, afraid of commitment to one person for the rest of his life...(sounds like most men, huh?). The Best Man is the best love story of '99.  My fiance' and I are going to see it again tomorrow. This rating is totally wrong.  Any couple will love it. Or single person for that matter. It reality, of what life really is like for Young Blacks.  There are far less of us shooting and killing each other over petty drug money.  Many of us are young College Graduates on the raise and executives of tomorrow. I hope and pray that directors, writers, and producers learn to focus on the reality and not the myth.  Anyone who hasn't seen the move, go see it, it's great.

THE BEST MAN is The Best Movie. I saw The Best man opening night. The movie took me on an emotional rollercoaster. Terence, Monica, Morris, Nia and Taye were wonderful. Befor, the movie was over I was on a Natural High. If I paid any attention to the reviews of this movie I would have missed this wonderful depiction of Black life.  Contrary to a reviewer in my hometown paper,(he felt it was unrealistic that a group of Black friends from college would all be secessful)there are many Black Americans that live like the characters in the movie. They are my family, friends and the people down the street.                                                  The Best Man is a Must See.  I plan to go see it again. This movie was a positive and real reflection of African Americans. The middle working class is what most of African Americans are.  Not the hard and gangsta rap, unemployed and ghetto representations that most potray them.  I appreciate Mr Lee and all the fine actors for their hard work. As an aspiring black actress I felt so proud and hopefull as I watched this film.  As I struggle through 60 hour weeks of classical theatre school, it is nice to see that there will be a place for me one day.  On a more personal level I was awed by the depth of character and the respect in the portrayl of our relationships and souls as black people.   This film didn't hype stereotypes of us, it showed us in a way that America and the general public are obviously ready to see.  I appreciate that it catered to us.   It was inspiring.

I loved this movie.  I felt it was one that I as a college educated black man could relate to.   It certainly appeals to me and my peers far more than some of the other movies that were given higher ratings by these critics listed here.  I think that their lack of appreciation for the movie clearly demonstrates their lack of appreciation for the culture that inspired the movie. These critics should not take themselves so seriously.   There views clearly reflected their limited experience with cultures outside of their little worlds

The movie was absolutely wonderful?  It is definitely worth the money to see it during full-time rates.  The story line was credible, the movement from scene to scene was fluid, and it was quite unpredictable which makes for a wonderful adventure in movie watching.   There were no lulls in the movie and nothing that made one say, "when is this going to be over?"  It quite easily held my interest and invoked a variety of emotions.  It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made defend men as well as chew them up and say "that's what you get".  Hats off to Malcolm and the entire cast for a job better than well done!!

The movie was very good.  There was a good plot and the body of the movie was excellent.  The way the relationships were put together was different because eveyone were guys and Nia Long was the only lady.  But that doesn't realll count.  The only thing we think was wrong was when the guy with the dreads came to the wedding with the stripper Candy and his girlfriend was there. He broke up with her and in the reception one of his friends ended up sleepin with her.  Other than that it was a great movie.   There was a lot moral value and deep feelings for relationships.

Well done!!  For his first "real" project Malcolm Lee is definately a pleasure.  The characters are well defined and the casting could not have been better.  You feel like you know them only because you probably know someone like one of the characters.  If you watch it for imagery its there---> notice that when Harper and Jordan are talking and she mentions them being two peas in a pod the couch that is chosen for them to be on is a green pea colored couch.  I dont know how else to say it.  Theres something for everyone.  Go support this movie!

Morris Chestnut is really a nice looking young man.  I haven't seen him since when he played on the Patti Labelle show and in Boys in the Hood.  He is really an attractive man.  Oh, but I can't leave out my man, Taye Diggs. Still fine.  I wish I was single and around his age.  He is another one to droll over just like Billy Dee Williams WAS in the 70's and 80's.  Notice I said WAS. Taye, keep up the good work.   Morris, you really look good.  As for the movie, I really enjoyed it.  It brought back memories of my college days.  It shows that blacks do go to college and can get good jobs.
