The Etruscan Smile stars Brian Cox (HBO’s Succession and current Broadway leading man in The Great Society) as Rory MacNeil, a rugged old Scotsman who reluctantly leaves his beloved isolated Hebridean island and travels to San Francisco to seek medical treatment. Moving in with his estranged son, Rory’s life will be transformed, just when he expects it least, through a newly found love for his baby grandson.
The cast also includes Rosanna Arquette, JJ Feild, Thora Birch, Treat Williams, Tim Matheson, Peter Coyote and Emanuel Cohn.
The film is based on the bestselling book La Sonrisa Etrusca by Jose Louis Sampedro, with the story being transposed to Scotland and the United States. The title refers to the famous terra cotta statues that bear a mysterious smile even in their afterlife.
The Etruscan Smile is produced by multiple Academy Award winner Arthur Cohn. (His six Oscars: The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, Dangerous Moves, One Day in September, American Dream, Black and White in Color and The Sky Above, The Mud Below.) The film is directed by Mihal Brezis & Oded Binnun. The screenplay is by Michael McGowan, Michal Lali Kagan and Sarah Bellwood. The executive producer is Renata Jacobs. The cinematographer is Javier Aguirresarobe. Opening November 1 in New York and Los Angeles, the film’s theatrical distributor is Lightyear Entertainment.
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.
