Tolkien.  The<br \/>\nsecond film will be &#8220;The Hobbit: There and Back Again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>      Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before &#8220;The Lord of<br \/>\nthe Rings,&#8221;  which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big<br \/>\nscreen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the<br \/>\nOscar\u00ae-winning &#8220;The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>      The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo<br \/>\nBaggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf<br \/>\nKingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.  Approached out of<br \/>\nthe blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a<br \/>\ncompany of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin<br \/>\nOakenshield.  Their journey will take them into the Wild; through<br \/>\ntreacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and<br \/>\nGiant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.<\/p>\n<p>      Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the<br \/>\nLonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo<br \/>\nmeets the creature that will change his life forever\u2026Gollum.<\/p>\n<p>      Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake,<br \/>\nthe unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and<br \/>\ncourage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum&#8217;s<br \/>\n&#8220;precious&#8221;  ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities \u2026 A<br \/>\nsimple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways<br \/>\nBilbo cannot begin to know.<\/p>\n<p>      Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he<br \/>\nplayed in &#8220;The Lord of the Rings&#8221; trilogy, and Martin Freeman in the<br \/>\ncentral role of Bilbo Baggins.  Also reprising their roles from &#8220;The<br \/>\nLord of the Rings&#8221; movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm<br \/>\nas the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as<br \/>\nElrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; and Andy<br \/>\nSerkis as Gollum.  The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical<br \/>\norder) Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John<br \/>\nCallen, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter<br \/>\nHambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher,<br \/>\nEvangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish,<br \/>\nMike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O&#8217;Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael<br \/>\nPersbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan<br \/>\nTurner.<\/p>\n<p>      The screenplays for both &#8220;The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey&#8221; and<br \/>\n&#8220;The Hobbit: There and Back Again&#8221; are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens,<br \/>\nGuillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson.  Jackson is also producing the<br \/>\nfilms, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham.  The<br \/>\nexecutive producers are Alan Horn, Ken Kamins, Toby Emmerich and Zane<br \/>\nWeiner, with Boyens serving as co-producer.<\/p>\n<p>      Under Jackson&#8217;s direction, both movies are being shot<br \/>\nconsecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo<br \/>\ntechnology.  Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios,<br \/>\nWellington, and on location around New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>      Among the creative behind-the-scenes team returning to Jackson&#8217;s<br \/>\ncrew are director of photography Andrew Lesnie, production designer<br \/>\nDan Hennah, conceptual designers Alan Lee and John Howe, composer<br \/>\nHoward Shore and make-up and hair designer Peter King.  The costumes<br \/>\nare designed by Ann Maskrey and Richard Taylor.  The score is being<br \/>\ncomposed by Howard Shore.<\/p>\n<p>      Taylor is also overseeing the design and production of weaponry,<br \/>\narmour and prosthetics which are once again being made by the award<br \/>\nwinning Weta Workshop.  Weta Digital take on the visual effects for<br \/>\nboth films, led by the film&#8217;s visual effects supervisor, Joe Letteri.<br \/>\nPost production will take place at Park Road Post Production in<br \/>\nWellington.<\/p>\n<p>      &#8220;The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey&#8221; and &#8220;The Hobbit: There and<br \/>\nBack Again&#8221; are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line<br \/>\nmanaging production.  Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide<br \/>\ntheatrical distribution, with select international territories as well<br \/>\nas all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.<\/p>\n<p>      &#8220;The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey&#8221; will be released on December<br \/>\n14, 2012.
