REVIEW: THE LIBERATOR
3/8/2015
OVERVIEW: The Cohen Film Collection announced that THE LIBERATOR, director Alberto Arvelo's acclaimed new film about Latin America's greatest fighter for independence, Simón Bolívar, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on March 10, 2015.
Portraying the larger-than-life hero Bolívar is the prize-winning Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez, whose career has ranged from acclaimed dramas of modern South American history (Carlos, Che) to Hollywood hits (Zero Dark Thirty, The Bourne Ultimatum, Wrath of the Titans). Ramirez won France's prestigious César Award for Most Promising Actor for the 2010 miniseries Carlos; that performance, as the Venezuelan terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal, also brought him Best Actor nominations from the Golden Globes, the Emmys and the SAG Awards.
"Édgar Ramírez is electrifying," praised Jordan Hoffman in the New York Daily News. The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy said, "The exceptional life story and history that will be unfamiliar to most viewers keep the film absorbing, and then there's the big plus of Ramírez in the title role." Ron Wilkinson of Monsters and Critics said, "The lavish war epic comes back to life in this swashbuckling tale of treachery and charisma."
SYNOPSIS: THE LIBERATOR, starring Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominee Édgar Ramírez, is an epic adventure covering the incredible life of Simón Bolívar, the 19th century revolutionary and political leader who sought to free Latin America. Bolívar fought more than 100 battles against the Spanish Empire in South America. He rode more than 70,000 miles on horseback. His military campaigns covered twice the territory of Alexander the Great. His army never conquered - it liberated. Bolívar was instrumental in the establishment of the independent republics that sprang up after the Spanish departed. He served as president of both Peru and Colombia, and he organized in southern Peru a new republic, which was named Bolivia in his honor.
