SYNOPSIS: It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
FILM REVIEW:
Amanda Waller:
I want to assemble a task force of the most
dangerous people on the planet, who I think can do some
good.
Wow, talk about taking a risk. She is
convinced, however, that she can pull it off which
probably makes her the biggest badass of the bunch. The
fact that it's Viola Davis in that role, well, I mean come
on, I don't think anyone else could have done better. This
leads me to my first positive point of this film and that
is the masterful job of casting. Viola was about as sharp
as I've ever seen her. There was no doubt that she was in
command and she didn't hesitate to let you know. Next
let's mention Mr. Jared Leto, recent Oscar winner and well
deserved. He does about as good as everyone is hoping in
the career enhancing role of The Joker. Crazy, check,
psycho, check, homicidal, check, eccentric, check check,
intimidating, check, literally colorful, very much check,
and all around cold and scary, check. He did it all and
was convincingly good at it, however, his performance just
made Heath Ledger's performance that much better. Huh? Let
me explain. Even though Jared was good, it was not better
than Heath's performance which in turn further strengthens
Heath's position as arguably the best Joker performance
ever. Notice I won't even mention Mr. Jack Nicholson
because it's Jack Nicholson. It was a different time, a
different take on the Batman saga and Jack's Joker was
probably the best thing to come out of all that. Will
Smith as Deadshot was one of the highlights of the film
but I will honestly say that he didn't blow me away, pun
intended. His performance was slightly bland. I think he
did a better job with Hancock. Another cast member I wish
to give honorable mention to is that of Cara Delevingne
playing the creepiest character of the bunch, Enchantress.
She did pretty good with the role and it doesn't hurt that
some of the best special effects of the film revolved
around her character. As for the special effects, yeah,
they were quite cool. Now for the last cast member
honorable mention, I have left the best for last, and the
real reason I was thoroughly anticipating the release of
this movie, Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn. Now
Cara is truly drop dead gorgeous even when she is all done
up as the Enchantress, but Margot is just all that and
more. She shines and steals every scene she is in and
basically steals the show overall. In her case, it doesn't
hurt that she looks amazing in her Harley Quinn outfit,
short shorts and a tight T. But all sexiness aside, she
does give a solid performance which just makes her that
much hotter. She's beautiful and she can act . . . I've
gone as far as to say she is the next Charlize Theron.
Priscilla just scoffs at my comment.
Rick Flagg:
This is the deal: You disobey me, you die. You try to
escape, you die.You irritate or vex me...
Harley Quinn:
[interrupts] I'm known for being quite vexing, I'm just
forewarning you...
Rick Flagg: ...you die.
[Harley pouts]
She can vex me anytime she . . .
oops, sorry Priscilla. Sorry to you too readers, I feel
like a high school kid writing about all the hot chicks in
the movie. Okay, so enough of that and on with the show.
The movie is intense and action packed but it is also
choppy and cliche. I can't quite put my finger on it, but
it is as if something is missing. I've seen my share of
superhero movies and I realize that this particular
superhero movie deals with the worst "superheroes" ever,
but even so, something is just not as good as I hoped.
Maybe it's the choppiness or the lackluster dialogue at
times, I'm not sure, but something about this flick leaves
you wanting. Maybe it's the weak storyline that was a
little too convenient. Luckily, the movie does have its
other aspects that save it such as the cast and their
performances. The filming locations and various sets were
appropriate and well used. There was also a very good use
of color in the film in general, be it costumes, props,
the characters themselves, and heck, even the opening
titles and closing credits use some cool fonts and color
schemes. Another very strong positive aspect of the film
is the incredible soundtrack. The song selections and
timing were right on. Writer/Director David Ayer has done
some pretty good work throughout his career in film. WIth
the mixed reaction to the recent Batman vs. Superman
movie, DC really needed Ayer to knock this one out of the
park. Well, he didn't strikeout, but I think he only got a
double.
