REVIEW: MUTANT CHRONICLES

08/01/09

OVERVIEW: A dark age
descends upon humanity when the steampunk saga Mutant
Chronicles arrives on DVD and Blu-ray Disc August 4 from
Magnolia Home Entertainment under the Magnet label Starring
Thomas Jane (The Mist, The Punisher), Ron Perlman (Hellboy
films, "Beauty and the Beast), John Malkovich (The Great
Buck Howard, Burn After Reading) and Devon Aoki (Sin City, 2
Fast 2 Furious).
SYNOPSIS: In the
year 2707, war rages between Earth's four giant corporations
as they battle over the planet's dwindling resources. Amid
heavy combat, an errant shell shatters an ancient buried
seal, releasing a horrific necromutant army from its eternal
prison deep within the Earth. As the mutant plague threatens
human extinction, a single squad of soldiers descends into
the very heart of the darkness in an attempt to save the
planet from marauding hordes of mutants. Based on the
classic role-playing game that has already inspired card
games, video games, novels, comic books and collectible
miniatures
BLU-RAY:
The film is
presented in 1080P widescreen in a 1.85:1 aspect ration
preserving its theatrical format. The picture is just
flawless, bringing to perfection special effects of
the film. My only complain visuali has to be bloody scenes
which to me look too much like a video game. Not only the picture looks great in this release,
also the sound it is good, a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio
in English that provides a
good complement to the picture. It includes English and
Spanish subtitles.
In terms of Special Features,
the Mutant Chronicles Blu-ray
is loaded with bonus materials including a comprehensive
'Making Of' documentary, deleted scenes, green screen and
story board comparisons. a look at the visual effects as
well as the cast panel Q&A from Comic Con and interviews
with the cast and crew.
Overall Mutant Chronicles is
one of those film in which you don't need to think too much,
the plot is not existent. Well many game fans will argue
with me in term of the plot. however it is what it is. The
performance don't help much either. The only performances
worth something were those from Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman.
If you are in the mod for some bloody action scenes,
definitely this is the film for you.
