BLU-RAY
REVIEW: THE MACHINIST
05/15/09
SYNOPSIS: In this
psychological thriller an industrial worker hasn't slept in
a year and is living a nightmare where cryptic notes appear
and he has visions of a co-worker no one else can see. Are
these mysteries part of a plot to drive him mad? Or, has
fatigue simply robbed him of reason?
OVERVIEW:
On May 19,2009 Paramount Home
Entertainment will be releasing on Blu-ray for the first
time, the classic mystery thriller The Machinist. The 2004 film directed
by
Brad Anderson and starring Christian Bale
, Michael Ironside , Jennifer Jason Leigh , Aitana Sanchez-Gijon
, John Sharian . The Blu-ray will
include the same special features included in the previous DVD.
BLU-RAY: The film is
presented in 1080P widescreen preserving its theatrical
format. It seems to be the same cut use for the DVD, however
the picture is just flawless, giving the film the clarity that
only high definition can provide. Paramount Home
Entertainment has done it again with this transfer. Not only the picture looks
excellent in this release, also the sound it is good, a 5.1
Dolby TrueHD in English that provides a nice complement to the
picture. It also includes 5.1 Dolby Digital language tracks
in Spanish and French, as well as subtitles in Spanish,
French and Portuguese
In terms of Special Features,
the Blu-ray Disc includes basically the DVD's original
featurettes. The good news is the "Manifesting the
Machinist" and "The Machinist: Hiding in Plain Sight"
featurettes are in HD. I found to be good, because this
classic deserved it. the feature film commentary by Director
Brad Anderson. It also includes the featurette "The
Machinist: Breaking The Rules", which give viewers are in
dept look at the secrets behind the film. Finally it contains a total of
eight deleted and expended scenes, all worth watching.
This is a blu-ray to own, very
few times I recommend upgrading a DVD title. And The
Machinist is one of those tittles that deserve an upgrade.
In my eyes this film is a true classic. It is one of those
films that are hard to find these days. Overall the Blu-ray looks great
and should not be missing in anybody's collection, however it is
unfortunately that it doesn't include a digital copy.
