REVIEW: Cashback
07/19/07

Most
of the romantic comedies follow the same plot. The main
character just came from a terrible breakup or is in a
relationship with the wrong person. Then the character meets
someone new or finds out love is in front of their eyes in
the form of a friend or ex-girl/boyfriend. All of the sudden romance blooms
but unexpectedly there is a fight. The plot takes a
couple of twists and turns and the couple makeup.
Finally in a blink of an eye there is the happy ending. Cashback is not the exception, however it's more
intelligent, profound, refreshing and funny, which makes it
worth watching.
The film starts with Ben
Willis' (Sean Biggerstaff, Oliver Wood in Harry potter) narrative of the breakup
with his girlfriend Suzy (Michelle Ryan). This
narrative serves from the
beginning as director-writer Sean Ellis makes sure that the
audience gets inside Ben's character. As a consequence of
his break up, Ben develops insomnia. Frustrated by his lack
of sleep, he finds himself working the night shift at a supermarket. Surrounding his depressive
and imaginative
state of mind are these wacky colorful supermarket co
workers which
spice things up with a lot of humor. In
addition, the love for beauty
by director Sean Ellis is expressed even poetically at times, as Ben
imagines that he could stop time and describes how he sees
the world around him. As the hours go by at this dead
end job, Ben starts to pay more attention to checkout girl
Sharon (Emilia Fox), giving him hope to restart a normal
life.
Even though the plot
continues to be standard in this genre, it is the narrative
what makes this film stand out. At times Ben's
narratives are so profound and intelligent that they become
music for the imagination, allowing the audience to perceive
Ben's emotional and artistic feelings.
Cashback started as an
eighteen minute short film in 2003. The film was
later nominated in the best short film category in 2006
Academy Awards.. After the short film was completed Sean
Ellis started wondering about the idea of creating a full
length feature. Finally he decided to add more to the film
instead of changing it.
