Cast Away : Friday December 22, 2000

Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer whose personal and professional life are ruled by the clock. His fast-paced career takes him, often at a moment's notice, to far-flung locales -- and away from his girlfriend Kelly, played by Helen Hunt.

Chuck's manic existence abruptly ends when, after a plane crash, he becomes isolated on a remote island -- cast away into the most desolate environment imaginable. Stripped of the conveniences of everyday life, he first must meet the basic needs of survival, including water, food and shelter. Chuck, the consummate problem solver, eventually figures out how to sustain himself physically. But then what? Chuck begins his true personal journey.

After four years, fate gives Chuck a chance to fight his way back to civilization, only to find an unexpected emotional challenge greater than all the earlier physical ones. His ability to persevere and to hope are a product of his life-changing experience. Though the conclusion of Chuck's story may not be a conventional Hollywood ending, it is, like life, full of truth, pain and promise. -- © 2000 20th Century Fox

 The People's Review of Cast Away

Firefly
Score = "100"
"Beautifully directed with the correct choice of choosing Tom Hanks as the main character. This movie is very deep, not just those what-you-see-is-what-you-get movies. Hence, it mentions a lot about if you don't have a goal, how life could be miserable where death is the solution to all problems. Chuck's(Tom Hank's) goal was to be able to see Helen Hunt again, but other than that, was to live to see the last FedEx mail sent back to the sender and that was how he could keep sane. Also, 'Cast Away' is a movie where the director doesn't add fancies to it in order to 'hope' to impress viewers, but rather keeps it natural and, in my opinion, that's how movies should be. All in all, this movie is a 'must see.'"

"The premise was good, the acting was phenomonal. the mike hanging down from the top of the screen was just plain bad. in every scene that involved dialect in-doors the microphones can be seen in the shot! it really takes away from the experience. the ending drifts off leaving us saying ""and then... ?"" all in all, i liked Cast Away, but i can't help feeling it was rushed some how." "Although Tom Hanks did a great job in this movie I did not like the ending. You really got to know his chariter and cared about him. To end the movie the way they did was cruel. It needed alittle more closure. Also the editing was poorly done. In a could have been touching scene you see a mic hanging on the top of the screne. In another scene youcan see the whole boom. Nice job directors."

"Beautiful masterpiece of film making and poetic commentary on the human condition in modern life. The symmetry of the film's composition reminds one of the musical form of great compositions: crafted so well that one hardly notices the craft. Symbolism permeates every aspect of this gripping adventure story, so it can be experienced simply or profoundly. The title is Cast Away -- two words, rather than the expected one-word label for one who is marooned. Why? The film is about stripping away the non-essential right down to the core of what life means. Like many great, subtle works of art, this film yields to each viewer what that viewer brings to the film. And adds richness to every viewer."

"CASTAWAY WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY MOVIE. I WENT IN THINKING IT WOULD BE A UNIQUE MOVIE EXPERIENCE. IT WAS THAT AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. TOM HANKS IN HANDS DOWN HIS BEST WORK TO DATE, DID A WONDERFUL JOB OF USING HIS BODY LANGUAGE AND EMOTIONS TO CARRY THE AUDIENCE THROUGH THE 45 OR SO MINUTES OF NO DIALOUGE. THIS MOVIE NEVER GOT BORING. IT EVEN IN MY OPINION GOT BETTER AND EVEN MORE TOUCHING AS THE FILM PROGRESSED, ALL THE WAY TO THE END. HELEN HUNT SHINES IN WHAT I THINK IS HER BEST ROLE IN RECENT MEMORY. THIS WAS DEFINATELY NOT YOUR SAME OLD BIG STUDIO PICTURE, WHICH IS NOT NESSICARILY A BAD THING. HANKS AND ZEMECKIS REALLY OUT DID THEMSELVES THIS TIME. FOR A WONDERFULLT TOUCHING MOVIE GOING EXPERIENCE GO SEE CASTAWAY. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!" "
