REVIEW: 13 GAME OF DEATH

03/10/08

13: Game of Death is a
movie adaptation of the Thai manga “My Mania,” and it
depicts the desperation of a man who tries to get out of
debt. The movie starts on a slow mode and by watching the
first minutes people can be discouraged in giving it a
tried, but after a good ten minutes the movie picks up a
pace that will hook the audience in trying to figure out the
reason of those acts. As many Asian movies this is not for a
weak stomach, it is as graphic as Hostel, and as smart as
SAW with an unpredictable ending. The movie might result
confusing for people who do not paid attention from the
beginning, but at the end it pays off with a delightful and
sick story.
Chit is a musical instruments salesman, unfortunately he is
not going through his most brilliant facet of his career;
his sells are down, his co workers are taken his customers,
his mom keeps asking for money, and in the sentimental side
his wife just left him. Everything goes from bad to worse
when he has his car repossessed., and one of his coworkers
steals one of his most valuable clients; the only bright
side is his friend Twang. While in a smoking break he
receives a mysterious phone called offering a quick solution
for his monetary problems $100 million to be exact, the
catch he has to complete 13 different task or he will lose
all the money. In the beginning the idea seems tempting
since the task were quite simple and the prices generous,
Chit accepts the offer since he is a desperate man, but
little did he knows is that they will keep getting harder
putting in questions his sanity, friends, values, health,
past, and his life.
The movie is well presented and the level of difficulty of
the games keep rising and rising making the audience to paid
attention more to the movie. However in my opinion 13 were
to many since when the movie is by its 10th game the
audience just wants to know the reasons for this game,
nonetheless, the waiting is worth it since the games are
attractive to the audience and the conclusion its just
unimaginable. Krissada Terrance gives a splendid performance
in showing the desperation and emotional transitions of his
character. The other characters also did a good job although
none of them are as crucial as the main character, this is
basically a one man movie, but a good one. The photography
and script are kept simple, but they do not become
monotonous or boring, actually it makes it easier to
understand, I recommend to watch it in its original language
since the translated version the voices are not as
penetrating and appealing. Special effects wise for a horror
/ thriller is not as impressive as it had should been, there
a couple of scenes where it is easy to identify what is real
or fake, nonetheless it is forgivable since the idea behind
it is well taken by the audience, and then again there are
some scenes where the Special effects impress me like in
game 10. The movie also touches important moral issues like
politics, honesty, love, and friendship which is rare in a
horror movie, but it does it so settle that the audience
wont feel annoyed by it.
Director Chokiat Sakverakul great a phenomenal job adapting
this comic book to film, he kept it simple and interesting,
with a good cast and exaggerated imaginative situations and
with an ending as great as any of the saw movies he managed
to entertain and please his audience. It explores the basic
human need to find happiness, and put in question that old
saying: the means justify the ends. I recommend this movie
to fans of the comic, fans of movies such Hostel and Saw,
and fans of reality Shows like Fear Factor. With this
mixture the audience should be prepare for an exiting and
exhilarating ride.

The DVD Design is eye catching for the first moment you see
it, you just imagine is another saw, marketing did a great
job in that, regrettably, the special features are not as
special as a regular flick, as matter of fact it only comes

To everyone who have no
life this movie is for you. This movie
is neither good nor funny. It just make
you think what is wrong with people now
a days when it come to making good
movies. Compared to this I rather watch
the history channel and do something
with myself than to watch this again. |
