REVIEW: 27 DRESSES
04/22/08
Do not underestimate "27
dresses", a film by director Anne Fletcher who promised a
different kind of formula to the typical cheese romantic
comedies. The movie was released in January 2008 and for
none other than the title the film got less than expected
attention insinuating it is a "chick-flick" unable to catch
the eyes of other audiences. However, after watching the
film, it is obvious that the general public who did not gave
it a chance missed out on a sassy, funny, and loving story.
A non assertive, nice young woman Jane (Katherine Heigl) has
been the perpetual bridesmaid going out of her way to be
there for her friends at their wedding even if it means
being a bridesmaid at two weddings the same day and at the
same time. She has kept the 27 dresses in a closet hoping
that one day she would be the bride of someone like George
(Ed Burns) whom she is secretly in love with. That is until
her little self centered sister, Tess (Malin Akerman) shows
up. On the side, she meets Kevin (James Marsden) a cynical
journalist who faces Jane with the reality of her situation,
gets her upset but always manages to put a smile in her
face.
Watching Golden Globe nominee Katherine Heigl in this role
was refreshing. She brings out in the character of Jane, the
lack of self confidence that all of us have felt at some
point of another. On the same note, James Marsden stepping
out of roles like X-men or Superman Returns was an excellent
move. His performance was so good that he took the male
leading role in this film opening new doors for himself.
Finally, Fletcher was able to bring a step by step grand
finale which was clever leaving out the open ended plots
that we are used to seeing in films of this genre.
Overall this film is not to be missed in its DVD released
debut.
