REVIEW: 300

07/29/07

There are movies that make you
laugh, some that make you cry, and even a few that make you
cringe, but every once in a while you get the opportunity to
see a movie that really makes you feel, inspires you , and
gives you goose bumps and chills. 300 based on Frank Miller
and Lynn Varley's graphic novel is such a movie. The surreal
quality of the movie added to its intensity and passion and
has placed this director, Zack Synder (Dawn of The Dead), in
the ranks with some of the best creative geniuses.
The movie “300” is based on the ancient and historical
Battle of Thermopylae where King Leonidas leads 300 of his
men to war against the Persians and their enormous army. It
take us through how the men of Sparta where groomed since
infancy to follow the Spartan values and laws, that teach
them loyalty to themselves and each other, and how to be
fearless and strong. Above all, they learn that their
freedom, comradely, and love for their family, are worth
living, and dying for. They learn that a death in defense of
all these thing is a death of glory.
This is not a movie I recommend if you want a good laugh, or
as something to keep your kids entertained. You will not be
seeing this summers “feel good” movie, there is no fluff or
raunchy humor. But if you want to see a well made movie with
a lot of intensity, passion and an inspirational story, then
I definitely think you should get comfortable and let the
adventure draw you in, you will not be disappointed. This
movie’s artistic and dreamlike quality only help to enhance
the dramatic and dark battle played out in this epic, and
while the violence is abundant, its also crucial and even
artistic. I was also very moved at the surprisingly deep
love between the king and his wife, while there was not a
lot of outward affection, there seemed a mutual
understanding and respect, as well as an intimate passion
that didn’t need verbalization. In the midst of all the
violence, I thought it gave the movie a wonderful balance.
This one will follow in the footsteps of some of the great
historical movies, and “Braveheart” definitely comes to mind
when watching this one and the fact that they don’t try to
feed you the typical cheesy happy ending just make the movie
all the more exceptional. What are you waiting for? Go see
it, it does not disappoint.
