REVIEW: 3:10 TO YUMA

SYNOPSIS: In Arizona
in the late 1800's, infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) and his
vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the
Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran
Dan Evans (Christian Bale), struggling to survive on his
drought-plagued ranch, volunteers to deliver him alive to
the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the killer to
trial. On the trail, Evans and Wade, each from very
different worlds, begin to earn each other’s respect. But
with Wade’s outfit on their trail – and dangers at every
turn – the mission soon becomes a violent, impossible
journey toward each man's destiny.
FILM REVIEW: Western
films have been a major part of Hollywood in the past. In
recent years this genre has being suffering from audiences
major support. In another attempt to bring this genre back
to good old days,
James Mangold
director of "Walk the Line" bring us a remake of 1957
Western film "3:10 to Yuma". A film that is probably one of
the top ten films of 2007. With a budget of $50 million
dollars the film was released in September 7, 2007. In
addition, it was able to make $56 million dollars in its
theatrical release. "3:10 to Yuma" is one of the two films
in which Lionsgate is putting it's hope for an award season.
As of now, the film was not nominated in any category for
the 2008 Golden Globes, but thre is still hope for Lionsgate
at the Oscars.
Director James Mangold's
remake of the 1957 Western film "3:10 to Yuma", proves that
remakes can be better than originals when the time is right
and the key elements are combined. One of those key
ingredients in this case is the cast, Russell Crowe is at
his best in this film portrays exceptionally well the good
and evil of his character as Ben Wade. According to sources
Tom Cruise was interested in playing Ben Wade's part,
however it is hard to imagine Tom Cruise playing that role
after seeing Russell Crowe playing that character. As far a
Christian Bale as Dan Evans, his theatrical talents shine as
he continues to demonstrate an actor that captivates in
every performance and this film was no exception.
The cinematography is rich and well presented in this film.
Every single detail of the Wild West was brought to
perfection. From beautiful West locations in New Mexico to
costume design, the film takes audiences back in time.
Overall "3:10 to Yuma" is well directed, well performed and
a Western classic that should not be missed!
