Wild Reeds (Les Roseaux Sauvages)
Considered by many to be Techine’s masterwork, this
compelling coming-of-age drama features the Algerian War as
a backdrop and paints a rich portrait of the inner turmoil
facing four teens in Provence. Techine’s multi-layered study
of his characters’ divergent political and personal
viewpoints creates a “sober, heartfelt piece of work” (San
Francisco Chronicle).
My Favorite Season (Ma Saison Préférée)
This emotionally charged and profoundly perceptive drama
earned Téchiné comparisons to Ingmar Bergman and John
Cassavetes by The New York Times. The film chronicles the
relationship between an estranged brother and sister drawn
together after their mother’s stroke. It is a rich,
bittersweet story of the hidden motives that tear people
apart and bring them back together.
I Don’t Kiss (J’Embrasse Pas)
I Don’t Kiss is a striking visual portrait of Pierre, a
young man in Paris searching for the meaning of life. After
ignoring sage advice from an older gay man, Pierre gives up
his dream of becoming an actor and enters the dark world of
male prostitution. However, his luck goes awry when he falls
in love with a beautiful female prostitute, which leads to
tragic consequences.
Hotel America (Hôtel des Ameriques)
In Biarritz, Gilles meets Hélène after a minor accident and
falls desperately in love with her. Hélène, combining
dazzling beauty and embarrassed silences, tries to escape
his growing passion. Prisoner of a lost love, she
nevertheless reveals her secret in the end.
