REVIEW: AUGUST RUSH

03/07/08

Fantasy, realism and
romance is the mixture of new comer director Kirsten
Sheridan in the movie, August Rush. Surprisingly this
movie was not commercialized for children's audiences, which
in my opinion would have been appropriate and big profit
booster. Even though, this film when first released in 2007
maintained a low profile, it was saved by the story line and
three outstanding performances; Freddie Highmore, Keri
Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyer.
The plot is a heart warming story of an orphanage boy, Evan
Taylor (Freddie Highmore) who "hears the music" and has
faith that his parents are alive and one day he will meet
them. He sets out on a journey to find his parents and in
the middle of Manhattan, New York, he embarks in an
adventure where he meets a Wizard, (Robin Williams), a
reverend (Mykelti Williams), and the directors of a school
of music who helps this music prodigy survive in the city.
The ongoing vibe of the city is turned into musical rythims,
beats and notes for young Evan whose name is changed by the
Wizard to August Rush in an effort not to be found by Social
Services and sent back to the orphanage. This combination of
city and musical sounds added a magical touch to some of the
scenes which was a delight to watch and listen to. In middle
of all this child entertainment are the heart struck parents
of Evan who are also musicians Lyla (Keri Russell) and Louis
(Jonathan Rhys Meyer) and living away from each other in two
different worlds have been unconsciously missing each other
and are unaware they have a son.
This musical impact can be palpated throughout the film from
Evan playing guitar in the park, to Lyla playing the cello
at concerts and Louis singing and playing the guitar as the
Irish rocker. Again these performances were a major plus for
this production. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing
for Robin Williams as the "undefined" Wizard who could
probably make the young crowd laugh with the screaming and
jerky movements. Along the same lines is William Sadler as
Lyla's father, who failed to give his character a more
realistic demeanor. In conclusion this is a wonderful
musical adventure with a touching story line that I am sure
will captivate the hearts of young and old. This DVD is
worth watching and will be released on March 11, 2008.
