REVIEW: BABYLON A.D

1/05/09

SYNOPSIS: In the
darkly futuristic world of Babylon A.D., the rules are
simple: kill or be killed. Hard-hitting action superstar Vin
Diesel (The Fast and the Furious, The Chronicles of
Riddick), stars as Toorop, a ruthless mercenary hired to
smuggle a mysterious young woman from the post-apocalyptic
confines of Eastern Europe to the glittering megalopolis of
New York City. Hunted at every turn, Toorop spirits his
charge across a nightmarish wasteland only to uncover a
shocking secret that will bring the entire world to its
knees. Eye-popping action and mind-blowing science fiction
clash head-on in this hard-edged thriller, where the only
rule is survival.
REVIEW: Based on the
French novel Babylon Babies by Maurice Georges Dantec.
Babylon A.D is a science fiction film that was released back
on August 29, 2008. The film managed to collect $56 millions
dollars in this worldwide theatrical release, well under its
$70 millions dollars financed by StudioCanal and Twentieth
Century Fox. The film will be release on DVD and Blu-ray by
Fox Home Entertainment on January 6,2009.
The pretention by the filmmakers with this film were good
and the $70 millions dollars budget are proof of it, however
the film's main problem was its similarity in plot to the
movie Children of Men. Same tough guy, same mission. Of
course with the difference that in Children of Men has
better acting and a more interesting flow of events. For
example the film expends too much time showing how a
post-apocalyptic Eastern Europe will look like, becoming
slow and repetitive. At the end the audience don't get the
opportunity to at least see a futuristic New York city.
This film is probably one
of the weakest performance that I have seen from Vin Diesel,
since he became a popular action adventure actor. In some
scenes he show some glimpses of toughness like we saw in
The Chronicles of Riddick, but for the most part he looks
like a regular guy.
DVD: The film is
presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ration, with a 5.1 Dolby
Digital surround sound in English, Spanish and Francais. It also

subtitles. The
