REVIEW: BARRIO
07/24/08
Goya Award Winner for Best
Director, Best Screenplay and Best New Actress (Marieta
Orozco) and Fotogramas de Plata Award Winner for Best Film,
Barrio is the gripping, often funny, coming-of-age drama
about three teenage boys in a Madrid working-class
neighborhood. Available for the first time on DVD in the
United States, Barrio was hailed as “powerful…relentless” by
The New York Times. Variety stated that the film “ably
captures the rhythm and flavor of adolescent street language
in its fresh, often funny dialogue, and is equally adept at
depicting – with detachment and without melodrama – the
texture of life in dysfunctional families scraping by on
minimum incomes.”
In the projects of Madrid, 15-year-old friends Rai, Manu and
Javi spend the hot summer days fueling their imaginations
with fantasies of beautiful women and exotic places. In
reality, they struggle with a very real lack of money and
opportunity. With no hope of escaping their mundane lives,
the boys roam the streets, where all they find is
trouble…and more trouble. Which ones will grow up? Which
ones will rebel? Will any of them find a way out?
