From the acclaimed
director-cinematographer Santosh Sivan (Bride & Prejudice)
and presented by Merchant Ivory (The Remains of the Day)
comes the visually stunning epic film Before the Rains. An
Official Selection at the Toronto International Film
Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Pusan International Film
Festival and Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and winner
of the 41st Annual World Fest 2008 Grand REMI Awards, the
film tells the story of an Englishman’s forbidden
cross-cultural love affair with an Indian maid during a
growing anti-British regime. Praised by critics nationwide,
Before the Rains was declared “a stunning film” (Rex Reed),
“cool and evocative” (New York Magazine) and
“unforgettable…a hothouse of sensuality, empire, class and
guilt” (Mira Nair).
Set in 1930s Southern India, Britain’s reign is beginning to
lose its hold on the region. Henry Moores is an entrepreneur
and businessman who has singled out Kerala as the site to
break ground on a potentially lucrative spice plantation.
When Moores discovers that he will have to build a new road
in order to make his plans feasible, he enlists the aid of
trusted right-hand man T.K. to help warm the locals to the
idea. While Moores relies on T.K. to help him
professionally, his personal needs fall on the shoulders of
his pretty Indian housekeeper, and they begin a torrid
affair.
