BLIND DATING

02/05/08

Blind Dating is one of those
romantic comedies movies that makes you think and appreciate
people for what they are, while it tries to entertains us
with some comical remarks. The trailer of the movie is
convincing enough to give it a chance and to expect a funny
sequence of event as in teen comedies like American Pie
where Sex is the main subject. Nonetheless, it is the whole
opposite, the movie turns out to be more mature focusing
more in romance, family values, and love. Blind Dating is
like a teen not that funny version of the 1999 movie At
First Sight. It will be release on DVD February 5 2008.
The movie is about Danny (Chris Pine), a smart, popular,
friendly 22 year old guy, who happens to be blind from
birth. All his life, Danny has tried to not let his
blindness be an obstacle in his life, he plays basketball,
baseball, and live a normal life with the help of his
family. However he feels that something is missing,
something more important than his sight, he has yet to be
involved with a girl, physically and emotionally. With help
of his brother Larry (Eddie Kaye Thomas), he will start his
quest to find that special someone, or at least lose his
virginity. Meanwhile while this is happening, he is also
contemplating the possibility of volunteering for a new
surgical procedure that can restore his sight partially.
Here is where meets Leeza (Anjali Jay) an Indian nurse at
the medical center, Danny discovers in Leeza what he is been
searching for and both of them fall in love with each other;
unfortunately for Danny, Leeza has been promise by her
family in an arrange marriage. Now Danny has to show her
that all those differences can be put aside, and prove
everything is possible with love.
The idea of having a blind guy going through blind dates
could be seen as funny and offensive at the same time; The
movie does neither of them, since it does not ridicule the
blind Character. The audience will feel sympathy for Danny
and will not see him as a blind guy at all but just as what
it is a guy. In this aspect I have to give the director ,
writer, and the actors my complements; they understood that
this was not about making fun of a physical impairment, but
of real life situations and issues that also could happen to
regular guys like dating, sex, stereotyping, cultural
differences, and family protection . All the characters are
realistic and amusing, all of them contribute in some sense
to the movie from Danny, Leeza, Larry, to Danny’s sexy
Therapist and family. The cast also did a magnificent job,
Chris Pine performance is at his best portraying Danny, he
shows all his acting skills and along with Anjali Jay
captivate us in each scene. Eddy Kaye Thomas and Jane
Seymour performance also are good as supporting characters
adding the comical part for the movie.
However the movie falls short in delivering a concise story.
It actually tries to do two stories at the time presenting
just fragments of each one and failing in joining it
together. One story is the one advertise in the trailers and
posters as a teen comedy, where different situations like
dating are presented to the main character resulting in not
so funny situations involving his stereotypical dates. The
only good thing for this part of the movie is that the
director tried to keep it from the main character
perspective, for example not too much nudity in the funny
scenes since the guy can not see. The second story is more
about this serious blind guy who has a chance to get his
sight, and falls in love with his nurse (how predictable).
This part is poor executed since the characters are just
shown sporadically and little are known about them and the
process. The relationship between Leeza and Danny and the
cultural difference are poorly developed, also the surgical
process promise to be a crucial part for the story , and end
up being trivial.
Blind Dating is not a movie you will remember for
originality; it is actually predictable and is not
definitely a must see. It has some strong performances by
the actors and it touches serious issues like cultural
difference. The movie will entertain you for a while and
have some isolated funny remarks. I recommend this movie for
people who like romantic comedies like The Truth between
Cats and Dogs or any other so called “Chick Flicks.”

not for you since it does not have any interesting little
