REVIEW: BRIDESHEAD REVISITED
01/10/09
SYNOPSIS:
Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode),
a young man of modest means but considerable ambition, has
just begun his studies at Oxford University, when he
encounters flamboyant aristocrat and fellow student
Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw). Infatuated with his new
friend’s hedonistic lifestlye, Charles eagerly accompanies
him to the family’s opulent mansion, Brideshead, where he
becomes entranced by the
eccentric clan and the palatial 18th century estate. But
when Charles falls for Sebastian’s beautiful sister Julia
(Hayley Atwell), his friend reacts with jealousy and the
siblings’ domineering mother, Lady
Marchmain (Emma Thompson), rules out the possibility of
marriage for reasons of class and religion. As Charles
becomes further involved with the Marchmain family, he
realizes that at Brideshead, everything
comes at a price
REVIEW: Imagine that
you are given the opportunity of visiting one of the most
beautiful estates in the country, mingle with its owners, a
high society family and
have an unforgettable romance. Well this is exactly what
happened to a young man in the film Brideshead Revisited.
This drama takes the viewer to a
journey through one of the most beautiful cities in Europe
and the
decadent world of British
aristocracy. While it explores social issues like economic class,
religious controversies, sexual taboos, and forbidden love. It is a captivating and suspenseful story
with one of the most beautiful backgrounds.
Charles Ryder (Mathew Goode) is the privileged young man
who visits Brideshead and is seduced by the world of the
aristocrats. His character develops from
being a curious college young man to becoming a world famous painter. It is this twist in his character
what highlights this actor's performance
potential. While the mood is serious and mostly dark at
Brideshead the presence of Hayley Atwell as Ms. Marchmain
intensifies the mystic dynamics of the
Marchmain family. Her performance is one of the best in this
film full of powerful surprises.
Only a the opulent, classic and mysterious Brideshead does
this story finds its perfect match. Warning! this movie
needs to be watched with an open mind and
a sensitive heart. No boos allowed.
