REVIEW: CLEANER
05/26/08
In “Cleaner” (Tom Carver)
Samuel L. Jackson, a former police officer, is the
proprietor of a company that cleans up crime scenes. Tom
runs into trouble when he is called to Ann Norcut (Eva
Mendes) home to cleans up a crime scenes that has yet to be
report to the police. Tom only finds out about it after the
matter, as all the paper work is on the up and up at the
time that he does the job. As Tom begins to investigate the
matter, he solicits the help of his former partner Eddie
Lorenzo (Ed Harris) to help him solve the mystery. Detective
Wallace (Luis Guzmán) is put on the case to investigate the
murder of Ann Norcut’s husband who may hold some information
into corruption in the police force.
The Cleaner gets off to a good start showing us how a crime
scene is cleaned and who is responsible for paying for it.
It basically a very nice background on the business. I also
liked how Tom Carver is portrayed as a clean freak which
goes with his line of work. The problems begin with the plot
as it unravels itself slowly and without much suspense. The
plot has so many elements to it that I can image that the
writer came from the soap opera business.
The only other thing that helps this movie is the amazing
cast lead by Samuel L. Jackson who turns in a very good
performance. Ed Harris is also very good and Luis Guzmán
does a very good job keeping up with the big boys.
Overall, I can’t recommend the Cleaner. It’s a movie that
has some interesting elements on the crime scenes cleaning
business but gets mixed up with too much plot and very
little suspense.
