REVIEW: College Road Trip

07/15/08

The time could not have
been better for director Roger Kumble and Disney to release
“College Road Trip” on DVD, which promises lots of
endearing, and comical moments. Just when students are out
on summer vacation and others have graduated to go to
college, many American families will be able to identify
with the plot of this movie. The bottom line is that the
story of this film is as common as coffee and doughnuts,
however it is the sugar added to it by the writers and
actors what complements the perfect recipe and success of
this summer blockbuster.
There is no doubt that Martin Lawrence and Raven Symone as
father and daughter was the perfect comedy formula, but when
you add Donny Osmond, and Brenda Song to name a few the
result is one wild, hilarious and curvy drama. When Melanie
Porter (Raven Symone) decides to keep her college options
open and apply to Georgetown University, her father (Martin
Lawrence) a control freak, over protective father is set out
to prove to her that her best option is Northwestern
University (closer to home). The father daughter journey to
find the right college brings us lots of laughs and some
wacky scenes. The biggest highlight is when Melanie (Raven)
sings “The Double Dutch Bus” song from the 1980’s in an
attempt to show her Dad she still remembered “their favorite
song” and she still wanted to connect to him regardless of
her cry for independence. The scene is so good it could very
well be “the video” for this 1980’s smash hit. Outstanding
performances by Donny Osmond, who had not done a film in
more than a decade and the very talented Brenda Song, who
plays Melanie’s mother. To complement this non-stop laughing
comedy, there is the savvy pig who added lots of flavor to
the already comical scenarios.
The DVD brings lots of bonus features for the entire family
to enjoy. Commentaries, alternative endings, Raven’s video
diary, and the “Double Dutch Bus” performed by Raven Symone
are just a few. For lots of laughs.
