REVIEW: DEATH SENTENCE
01/06/08
SYNOPSIS: Nick Hume
(Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a loving family
and a perfect life, until one gruesome night when his
teenage son is senselessly murdered during a gas station
holdup. Transformed by grief and not satisfied with
courtroom justice, Nick takes the law into his own hands—and
wages an all-out war against a gang of vicious street thugs.
FILM REVIEW: Back on
August 31, 2007, after the end of Hollywood's Summer
releases. 20th Century Fox released the film "Death
Sentence". A film based on the 1975 novel by Brian Garfield
and directed by young Malaysian director James Wan. This
courageous director, who made a name for himself with the
movie "Saw", goes away from horror films into an action
adventure film. "Death Sentence"s run in the theaters was
not the best, collecting only $9 million dollars at the box
office.
By looking at the title and
the synopsis of the film, the first thing that comes to mind
are the "Death Wish" films from the 70s and 80s, this movie
plays along the same lines. A vigilante film that from the
beginning the audience will know how is going to start and
how is going to end. In other words, it contains a very
common plot with a predictable ending. However, the catch of
this film is how it captivates the audience and then it
becomes hard to stop watching it.
Just like in the film "Saw",
director James Wan does a great job engaging the audience to
the film. His talent in making the audience ignore the
predictable plot by concentrating more on the developing
conflict, sequential action and final resolution of the
film, was outstanding. The action scenes are well presented
by Wan providing enough excitement to the film. In addition,
Kevin Bacon fans will be pleased with his performance in
this production.
Overall "Death Sentence"
provided enough material to entertainment in its DVD
release. There are two versions of the film unrated
and theatrical. The unrated version includes ten minutes of
footage branched back into the film. Let's not forget the
extra bonus features! These include an excellent
interview with Kevin Bacon.

Great film. James Wan
takes such a basic story and keeps you
intrigued the whole time. Was a good
drama when it needed to be and it has
great action scenes.
And for all those comparing it to Death
Wish...of course it's going to me
similar to Death Wish because the author
of the book this was based on wrote two
books, Death Wish and Death Sentence.
Death Wish was based on the first, and
Death Sentence was based on the second. |

This was trully a movie
that any man with a family should be
upset with. This man did some of the
dumbest things you could think of in a
movie. The only good thing about this
movie was the action. Not to give away
the movie but why did he wait so late to
get weapons to fight these weel armed
and bad intentioned thugs. I was really
upset at his ignorance. |
