DVD REVIEW:
DEDICATION
02/08/08
At last a romantic comedy with
a different twist. Romantic comedies tend to be rosy,
cheese, predictable and with state of the art characters,
yet the movie "Dedication" breaks ground in cinematography.
This is a fresh film that is able to tell an unpredictable
love story with cleverness and contagious emotions.
Who in the world has not felt anxious at one point of
another? Henry (Billy Crudup) does not only feels anxious he
is open to talk about it. Highly intelligent, and
persevering in the world of writing children's books, this
eccentric young man not only needs to feel safe, but at the
same time is not afraid to express his apathy for others.
His interesting and complex personality issues make his
character one of kind hilarious. In addition, to his
neurosis he talks to his dead friend and collaborator, Rudy
Holt (Tom Wilkinson) to release stress and clear out his
confusions. After Rudy's death, Lucy (Mandy Moore) becomes
his reluctant illustrator taking the big risk of working
with Henry will be trade off to get out of debt.
The story line by David Bromberg is unique and fresh. The
quote by Arthur Planck (Bob Balaban) the publisher,
"succeeding in this business is ninety-nine percent
perseverance and one percent talent" can be applied to the
innovative cinematography explored by director Justin
Theroux in this film. The flashbacks used while Henry is
talking to Rudy added flavor to those scenes. Along the same
lines, the music was melodramatic and consistent with the
moods and scenes. Finally, a big applause for Henry's
character who is the most unpopular, eccentric and
unpredictable romantic hero this Valentine's season.
