REVIEW: GOOD LUCK CHUCK
(Unrated)

01/11/08

OH, MY, GOD!!!
This phrase kept coming to my mind over and over as I
watched this film. Right off the bat let me warn you that if
you are a minor, a conservative, a prude or have strong
religious convictions, please turn around and walk out of
the theater quickly! You will find that illustrations from
the “Kama Sutra” ain’t got nothin’ on this film. Five
minutes into this movie you find yourself in the middle of
an “innocent” game of spin the bottle. Innocent until these
cute little kids start talking about sex. Chuck’s (Dane Cook) best friend, Stu (Dan Fogler),
is the fountain of all this information (and did I mention
boob obsessed?), albeit not always correct on the actual
mechanics. Chuck finds himself in a closet unwillingly
playing 7 minutes in heaven with “Goth Girl” (Sasha Pieterse).
Apparently she has been secretly crushing on him and when
Chuck refuses to show her the goods, she places a hex on him
that turns into Chuck’s grown-up curse. Now what seems like
a crisis to Chuck may seem like a blessing to some if not
most of the men out there. You see, the curse turns out to
make him a stepping stone to every woman’s
“happily-ever-after”. The problem is that he finally finds
his Ms. Right and has to find a way to keep her. The
extremely cute and ridiculously klutzy Cam (Jessica Alba)
has changed his opinion on love and thus he needs to find a
solution to his “lucky charm” appeal.
Taken at face value this film will get quite a few tears of
laughter out of you and maybe even an “I’m gonna pee in my
pants” moment, but it may be at the expense of out right
crudeness. Yes, a lot of the humor comes from taking clichéd
dirty jokes and bringing them to life, but it will make you
laugh.
Although there is quite a bit of female anatomy shown in
this flick, Dane Cook turns out to be quite a piece of eye
candy. Unfortunately, that is about all that makes him stand
out in this film. He seems to depend on the dirty joke
aspect of this film without putting much effort on his own
comedic talent. Jessica Alba never seemed to convince me
that she could truly be that clumsy and I kept getting the
feeling that she had to have been chosen as a second choice
for this part. The breakout star of this film in my opinion
is Dan Fogler as Stu. Just looking at him made me laugh but
the great thing is that when he opened his mouth it just got
better. If you’ve seem “Balls of Fury”, you’ll like him
better here. I can’t wait to see more of him.
Interestingly enough, you don’t seem to get a feel for where
this movie was filmed and the scenery is limited to
basically a penguin sanctuary, Chuck and Stu’s offices and
lots of bedroom scenes (did I mention that this film is
close to being pornographic?). That said, you will find that
visually the film will run the gamut of shots from cute
penguins, big girls in lingerie and simply old fashioned hot
chicks. You’ll find the ending to be schmaltzy and
predictable.

Good Luck Chuck

One of the least funny movies I have
ever watched. About 10 minutes in I was
moved to ask my wife if we should watch
something funny instead of this. We
unfortunately decided to stick it out
and see if it got better. The AV Club
talks abou this as a would-be
rape-comedy (if the gender roles were
reversed). I've only seen two Dane Cook
movies - this and the Wal-mart one. Good
Luck Chuck is so bad that the other one
seems hilarious. Not funny. Lots of
gratuitous sex scenes. Boring and
predictable plot. Everyone's favourite
Fogler is just gross. |
