GOSSIP GIRL
Season one
08/17/08

This series is all about New
York ‘s elite, the offspring of some of the wealthiest
families in the upper east side and their expensive private
school. It’s narrated by a gossipy blogger alias “ Gossip
Girl” who loves to dish about these privilege’s youths
scandalous escapades, hookups and their fabulous
drama-filled social events. This series definitely pushes
the envelope, and its scandalous storylines makes this one a
definite guilty pleasure. But please put your younger ones
to bed before you indulge in Season 1 of this wonderfully
original series because the last thing you want is your
child emulating any part of these teens racy adventures in
sex, violence, drugs, manipulation, and outright rebellion,
and the fact that they have unlimited trust funds to fuel
their escapades, only makes it more outrageous than anything
else on television
The series deals with the complicated relationship between
frenemies Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Serena van
der Woodson (Blake Lively), two poor little rich girls, each
with their own dysfunctional families, who are so good at
being bad, and they could not have picked a better pair of
actresses with such outrageous chemistry, as these two
phenomenal actresses who play their parts to a tee. Blair is
a rigid virgin, horrible to anyone who crosses her, who
dreams of consummating her relationship with her boyfriend
since childhood, whom she suspects has a thing for here BFF
Serena. She spends her time scheming and manipulating
everything to her favor and lashing out at anyone who stand
in the way of her getting what she wants. Her ultimate goal
is to marry her boyfriend Nate and seal her future as a rich
Yale graduate climbing the social ladder and stepping on
anyone who gets in her way. Serena is more of a free spirit,
who’s partying past has filled her with shame and secrets,
she left suddenly for boarding school and has returned just
as suddenly, resulting in everyone speculating as to why.
The only thing anyone knows is that she is filled with
secrets and refuses to follow the social rules everyone
seams to accept as the norm. She longs to break free of her
family name and just be, and begins to date Dan Humphry, a
poor yet nice, intelligent and gentle young man, who’s not
from an elite family and who’s as down to earth and normal
as they come. He has been infatuated with her for most of
his adolescent life but she just realized he exists and
begins to fall for the normalcy of his life and family,
neither of them realizing that their parents share a history
and romance that is almost identical to the one they are
living, with all the difficulty and hardship that comes with
dating outside of your social class. The relationships and
love triangles that play out between these teens and their
peers from their exclusive and expensive private school
gives us an insight into the lives of the rich and
privileged and show us that when it comes to love,
relationships and family, rich or poor we are all in the
same boat, with the same problems and complications, and
that money sometimes only serves complicates things even
more, and is not the key to happiness.
I definitely recommend this series to anyone who interested
in seeing how the other half lives, and anyone who enjoys a
little drama, scandal and of course, gossip. This exclusive
cast of characters couldn’t have been better if they truly
carried their characters personalities, instead of just
acting them. The woman are truly bitch personified and the
men do not lag behind. This is a truly remarkable cast. It
is definitely the guiltiest of all pleasures, so I urge you
to indulge.
