REVIEW: HOW SHE MOVE

04/25/08

In the 1980's "Flashdance"
broke ground in the movie industry by bringing a new genre
in films, an inspiring story with endearing characters,
music and dances. This type of films have continued to have
a welcoming approach by audiences of all ages, such is the
case of "How She Move". This film brings a warehouse
electrical vibe that has the potential to be debut in a
glamorous Vegas stage.
Raya is forced to leave the
private school that was her ticket to medical school after
her drug addict sister dies and her family is financially
compromised. Back in a crime infested neighborhood she has
to face the legacy of her late sister's reputation with
defiant remarks by her peers but instead of getting into a
fight she gets into step dance duel. Noticing that she can
dance invites her to watch his band dance and prepare for
the competition where only the first prize goes to a men
band. The money prize catches Raya's eyes as her only way to
get to college and with much perseverance she breaks all
bias and makes it to the all men team but in her way to
success she has to learn lessons in friendship, family ties
and team loyalty.
Choreographed by Hi-Hat the
actors and dancers of this film went into a "five week step
boot camp" that paid off well. Not being a fan of music with
on-going lyrics, I have to admit the music chosen for the
films was appropriate and the energy displayed while the
actors and dancers did the step dances was contagious. The
last three Monster Step competition dances were awesome and
while the ending is predictable the story line makes up for
the recycled ending.
