REVIEW: I Think I Love My Wife
08/06/07

Have you ever heard the
expression, “You had to be there?”. Well that pretty much
sums up whether or not you’ll really enjoy this movie, or
just watch it for Chris Rock’s vulgar humor. I do believe
that anybody who is currently married or has ever been
married will definitely find themselves nodding at the
majority of the movie’s plot. Anyone who has been in
marriage up to their eyeballs will be able to relate to this
comedy. It was surprisingly funny, with sad undertones that
you have to have lived to be able to sense. If you’ve seen
any of the movies trailers, you are in for a surprise
because they do not do the movie justice. This movie is a
lot like life, it has its humor, its highs and its lows, but
there is also a lot of shocking reality and choices to be
made.
Chris Rock plays a hard working husband and father, with a
good job, a nice house and a beautiful and intelligent wife.
He has seemingly the perfect life and marriage, but he is
absolutely bored out of his mind. His wife is always too
tired or busy to tend to his needs and has neglected him in
the most intimate way. He makes his way through the city, he
works in, surrounded by some of the most beautiful woman and
remain a good and faithful husband. He manages to step up to
his responsibilities as a good father, husband, and
provider, until he bumps into a friend’s beautiful
ex-girlfriend from his past. This is when his life takes a
drastic turn, and while she gets him into one scary and
dangerous situation after another, her wild and free spirit
adds the life, excitement and exhilaration he has been
missing. Swept up in her fast and free life he becomes more
involved, until he must make a choice: Give in to his
desires to be free and potentially break up his happy home
or remain true to the commitment he has with his family.
What would you do?
Surprisingly, this movie was also written and directed by
Chris Rock, and you can clearly see a lot of the funny bits
were lifted straight from his stand-up comedy act. The
performance by Steve Buscemi who plays a cheating
unemotionally attached husband was picture perfect.
Likewise, Kerry Washington who plays the trampy seductress
has some pretty good chemistry with Chris and delivers a
believable performance. And for Chris Rock, he acted just
like Chris Rock if you know what I mean. This movie,
however, actually has a very serious and important message
about marriage and the choices we make. It has more drama
than most comedies do, and even though it has its extremely
funny, laugh out loud moments, it’s a very serious movie. I
related to this movie from the moment it started, being part
of the ball and chain club myself, and I think I actually
learned some things from this film. If nothing else you’ll
realize that when you’re married, you’re not alone in your
isolation and boredom, but if you’re lucky you’ll realize
you also have the comfort of knowing you have someone to
work with, and fight with, to make things better. Besides
it’s always good to have someone to complain to at the end
of the day, don’t you think?
