02/22/09
Starring three-time Academy
Award® winner and nine-time nominee Jack Nicholson (Best
Actor, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 1975; Best Actor in
a Supporting Role, Terms of Endearment, 1983; Best Actor, As
Good As It Gets, 1997), two-time Academy Award® winner and
twelve-time nominee Meryl Streep (Best Actress in a
Supporting Role, Kramer vs. Kramer, 1979; Best Actress,
Sophie’s Choice, 1982) and directed by Academy Award®
nominee Hector Babenco (Kiss of the Spider Woman, 1975), the
classic drama Ironweed makes its long awaited DVD debut this
February. Nominated for two Academy Awards®, Best Actor
(Nicholson) and Best Actress (Streep), the film is based on
William Kennedy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same
name.
Francis Phelan (Nicholson), a drunken former baseball player
is running away from life and the painful, guilty memories
that haunt him. Helen Archer (Streep), is Francis’s longtime
girlfriend and partner in drink. Together they lament the
misery of life and ponder their tragic pasts, hoping to find
a way to free themselves from their troubled lives. Told in
a series of drunken flashbacks, Ironweed is a dark portrait
of depression-era hopelessness and a searing
character-driven drama.
