REVIEW: KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS
From the award-winning director of Comic Book Confidential, Grass, Go Further and a host of paradigm-shifting films reappraising the backwaters of popular culture, Ron Mann investigates the miraculous, near-secret world of fungi with his newest piece of cinema, KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS.
KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS follows über myco visionaries Gary Lincoff and Larry Evans as they lead us on a hunt for the wild mushroom and the deeper cultural experiences attached to the mysterious fungi.
Combining material filmed at the Telluride Mushroom Fest with animation and archival footage along with a neo-psychedelic soundtrack by The Flaming Lips and The Sadies, KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS opens the doors to perception and takes the audience on a longer, stranger trip.
After a vigorous festival run and multiple awards, the film opened in limited release to a successful box office with stellar reviews. The film is currently being screened in theaters and museums nationwide. Exhibits of the Vogels’ art collection are currently taking place in select museums across the country in a national gift program entitled “Fifty Works for Fifty States.” A large portion of their collection has been gifted to the National Gallery of Art in DC, and 2,500 works were chosen to display at a selected art institution in each of the fifty states. Through the Vogel “50×50″ collection, each of the 50 recipient museums is scheduled to exhibit the 50 works within five years upon receiving the gift.
An official selection at SXSW, KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS had a limited theatrical run and premiered on the Sundance channel in August, 2009.
Now you can experience this fun investigation into the near-secret world of mushrooms at home when KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS arrives on DVD on December 15, 2009!
