FILM REVIEW: An
interesting proposal by producers James M. McNamara and
Benjamin Odell, "Ladron Que Roba a Ladron" or in English "To
Rob a Thief" will definitely steal 100 minutes of your time
in return for some ingenious and amusing action. Award
winner Joe Menedez has scored big after directing TV shows
with this movie he has proved that he is capable of taking
bigger challenges and succeed. Another big name for this
theatrical team is JoJo Hernandez, who plays Julio Miranda
and is also writer after his success with "Stump the Band
(2006).
While the Spanish title
might lead audiences to believe that this film is intended
for a Hispanic audience, it is a Spanish speaking movie with
English subtitles that do not take away the mood of the
tense and funny scenes. When two thieves Alejandro Toledo
(Fernando Colunga) and Emilio Lopez (Miguel Varoni) get
together to rob a former band member Mactesuma Valdez (Saul
Lisazo) for fraud, it becomes a weird mixed combination of
who is right? One thing is for sure Toledo and Lopez want
vengeance and the only way to get it is by stripping Valdez
of his millions made by selling worthless products to
Latinos through infomercials. With the help of others like
Ivonne Montero (Rafaela), Oscar Torres (Miguelito), Ruben
Garfias (Rafa) and Julie Gonzalo (Gloria), this band of
thieves become a class act in irony and cleverness. Can they
pull it off?
Being a big fan of "novelas"
(TV nighttime soap), I was very happy to see some of my
favorite actors on this big production and happier to say
none of them let me down. Once again Hispanic actors,
writers, and producers continue to make a big name for
themselves and prove that there is great potential for
bigger and better theatrical challenges. With the release of
"Ladron que Roba a Ladron" in DVD audiences can also enjoy
special features with director Joe Menendez, writer and
actor Jojo Henrickson; the making of the film; deleted
scenes; and the making of the theme song with Andres Levin.
This film is highly recommended whether you speak Spanish or
not.
