REVIEW: MEET THE SPARTANS

05/22/08

SYNOPSIS: In Meet
the Spartans, the heroic Leonidas, armed with nothing but
leather underwear and a cape, leads a ragtag group of
13—count ’em, 13!—warriors to defend their homeland against
the invading Persians, whose ranks include Ghost Rider,
Rocky Balboa, the Transformers, and a hunchbacked Paris
Hilton. You won’t find a funnier Greek war film even if you
live to see 300!
REVIEW: Meet the
Spartans is one of those films that proves that there is an
audience for everything, even if the film received a splash of
bad reviews from the top critics. The movie was released
theatrically back on January 25, 2008 making around $18
million dollars at the box office surpassing the latest
installment of Rambo by a few hundred thousand dollars. Some
of the members of the Rambo's production argue that Meet the
Spartans benefited from Rambo's R rating, causing many teens
to buy tickets for Meet the Spartans and then sneak into
Rambo showings. We would never know if that was the case.
When it comes to this type of film, it is either you loved it
or you hated it. In this case the film was just a
little below average for me. There is no question as to what
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer were trying to do
with this movie. Piggy back on the success of the film 300
and you know what? It works. At least they got
me with this one. It is hard for me to enjoy or to watch in
its entirely this type of film, but in this case it did.
Mainly because I really enjoyed the film 300 and I wanted to
see what kind of outrages ideas Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer
presented in this film. I was able to get a couple of good
laughs by the end of the movie and I didn't feel
that I had wasted my time with "Meet the Spartans".
Overall the film has its
funny parts as well as those grotesque and moronic
parts that some people may find offensive, so be aware
if you decide to rent this puppy.
