Put Luke Wilson, Will
Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn in a movie together and what do
you get? One of the best comedies of 2003. The chemistry
between these actors is genuine and their timing, pitch
perfect. Director Todd Phillips who had mild success with
Road Trip has finally hit comedy gold with Old School.
In Old School Mitch (Luke Wilson) get an early flight home
from a conference and finds his girlfriend Heidi (Juliette
Lewis) is having a sexual escapade. The next day Mitch,
Frank (Will Ferrell ) and Bernard (Vince Vaughn ) are at
Frank’s wedding where Bernard is trying to discourage Frank
from going through with it. Afterward, Mitch gets a new
place next to Harrison University. Bernard decides to throw
him a house warming party that resembles a fraternity party.
The next day, Dean Gordon (Jeremy Piven) drops by and tells
Mitch the his house belongs to the campus. Using a loophole
Mitch, Frank, Bernard, create a fraternity to try and save
Mitch’s house. Words get out and everybody wants in on the
fraternity and start referring to Mitch as the Godfather,
but Dean Gordon is out to close them down.
The best thing about this movie and probably what makes the
entire thing work is the chemistry between Luke, Will and
Vince. Vince Vaughn is very funny. He hasn’t been this good
since Swingers Will Ferrell does a good job playing Frank a
mild departure from the very dumbfounded characters he
usually plays. Luke Wilson, the straight man, does a superb
job, and who can forget Andy Dick; he usual comes of
annoying but here he is brilliant. It’s the role he was born
to play.
The picture in HD-DVD is vivid; any artifacts that I
remember from the standard DVD edition are gone here. The
audio is very good. All in all this is a worthy upgrade to
the standard DVD edition and a welcome addition to any
comedy lovers library.
